Is this the patrol configuration of the G28?

I don't think so. 2RAR & Special Forces were issued HK417 as an interim solution last year. Designated the Marksmen Rifle System (MRS) the 417 comes with a Trijicon 6x48 ACOG optic & AN/PVS-26 night sight.

A 'German engineered' accurized AR-10 clone, among literally dozens of other similar weapons. Small American manufacturers have been churning these out for over a decade. This rifle does not really break any new ground.

Agreed - such as L129A1 as used by us and manufactured by those splendid chaps at LMT, Ilinois. Good job !
Mind you, the AR-10 was a ground breaker and its gas working parts and locking system have been around long enough for any issues to be history, so no surprise why clones exist. Having said that, what was wrong with a G3 and a heavier barrel ? Why didnt the Germans opt for them ? Any ideas ?

Well... it was adopted, one might say. In 2011 the G3DMR entered service with the German Army, though I understand H&K rather wished to sell the new HK417 instead of firing up the old G3 production lines again. This is why we ended up with the G28.

Well at this point, people interested in it are more concerned by the Gucci appeal of having 'HK' stamped on their kit rather than any improvement over say an SR-25

Do you really think that militaries buy equipment based on the name of the manufacturer? H&K is in service by about a dozen European armies and numerous police formations.

By the way, what is your experience with the said weapon as you know it has no improvements over the SR-25? Tested them both comparatively?

Its fairly observable. Who determines what weapons systems great or small get purchased. Follow the money long enough and it boils down to generally less than a dozen individuals who make the call. As for comparative analysis. There is a whole industry and array of official test centers to do that for us. Did the G28 break some kind of MRBF test that simply rocked the small arms world? Cause at the moment, it looks like a rifle designed to mimic the ergo of an AR-15 style weapon while putting match grade 7.62x51 nato rounds into as tight a group as possible in a semi auto weapon system. Something a host of rifles have been doing extremely well for decades now.
If this thing is the second coming of Jesus in a rifle thats easier to strip than an SR-25, never has to be re-zerod, doesnt need lube, oil or daily cleaning, is 2lbs lighter while being able to fire 5000 rounds at 1MOA at 800 yards without loss of performance and is 10% cheaper than its contemporaries i will take everything back. Hell if its just 2 of any of the above things i think its a great platform.

Otherwise its just retreading old, very well worn ground.

On those terms, it is only a very marginal improvement at best. Indeed, nothing revolutionary.

Actually its revolutionary in the way that german forces finally get a decent DMR, I dont care from what manufacturer.

What was wrong with the G3's? I thought the Non-DMR G3 versions were known for their DMR like accuracy; let alone the dedicated DMR versions of the G3.

A battle rifle with great accuracy doesn't automatically make a fine DMR. Germany had issued standard G3s with 4x scopes to infantry troops for a long time but there were no true snipers or designated marksmen and the advantages of this configuration over ironsights was slim. When Sarajevo's sniper alley taught us the need of sniping skills and designated weapon systems, full fledged bolt action sniper rifles were acquired but there still was no DMR concept until around 2008. It wasn't before 2011 that the first revamped G3s in a DMR configuration entered service but even those rifles were already 15 years old.

That's the "put it on a hesco inside a forward base"-variant, not the lighter and more rugged patrol version.
