They could have been paid, as happened before. But Assad does have some popular support among certain classes in the richer cities. Also the lack of religious clothing is telling. (bigger picture: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/6...kopf1600dotjpg )

Many nationalist groups adopted this salute in the Levant, but this does not necessarily mean they admire National-Socialism. Although some did, while others simply admired the organizational capabilities.

the salute makes up for the lack of religious clothing

This salute is widespread in some countries.
    For example:
    India

    Salvador

Yes I just explained its usage in the Levant a few posts back. We all know it wasn't just the Nazis using it. In some cases it was to imitate the Nazis from an ideological point of view, sometimes just out of respect for German organizational skills and sometimes totally unrelated to Nazism. However if you look into the influences of nationalist ideologies like the Ba'ath and the SSNP it speaks for itself.

Fear of Sunni Muslims is unreasonable ( Islamophobia )
Do you remember what Gaddafi is saying?
If i fall Libya would fall In the hands of Islamic extremism ! And this is exactly what it says Bashar al-Assad and the rest of his regime, which is on the verge of collapse
I think the demand for Middle Eastern peoples : freedom and democracy are not irreversible no matter how powerful the sacrifices No turning back The time for tyrants People say : Bashar the game is over The fate of Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein and Hosni Mubarak, Ben Ali and Ali Abdullah Saleh will be your fate Dominoes are falling one by one
