The prototype Gun is named P-1( 55 ), It is based on FH-77 which was purchased in 1984 to 1990, but coz of various reasons it was not feasible to import further, FH-77 played a major role in Kargil war, Now MOD has cleared to manufacture 414 pieces of the new gun based on Battle Proven FH-77 guns, This New Gun can fire 8 rounds per Minute, It can be deployed easily, The range of the gun is 30km with Regular Ammunition and can be Extended to 40kms.

it's a such a good news when the army is facing with dilemma over artillery no new artillery in donkey years, ages ago didn't the DRDO make a mutant SPT-Catapult, and according to wiki being phase out replaced by 4,000 new 155 mm self-propelled howitzers.....

DRDO is given the Job of making 52cal gun, the work in progress, It wasn't the DRDO idea abt Catapult but Army`s Own EME wing, The ARDE provided technical help in mounting 130mm m46 over Vicker`s tank chassis..
I dont know Wiki info, But only 200 Catapult were made out of 90 are today operational, Their is also a possibility to make a SPGH based on this gun, DRDO already made 105mm SPGH with MRSI capability and auto reloading, I hope they do something abt this 155mm barrel..
so it was like a workshop project rather then a dedicated one, Kunal you know my observation, The DRDO is good at making accurate and complex missile however seem to mediocre or below expectation when it come to designing a art.
What about copyrights? Did India acquire license to build FH-77?

The Indian Army initially planned to acquire 1500 FH-77B howitzers, from Bofors of Sweden, but due to the infamous 'Bofors Scandal' only 410 guns were purchased with license to manufacture another 1000 in 1987.
The Telegraph, reported on 14 January 2006, that a multi-million dollar artillery upgrade is in the works and would see the gun be upgraded to a 52 calibre standard. Then a media report, dated 06 May 2007, stated that proposals for the upgrade of 360 guns - worth USD $400 million - has been sent to Israel's Elbit Sytems Ltd, Britain's BAE Systems and India's Tata Power Strategic Electronics Division. The proposal requires the upgraded gun be presented to the Indian Army for field trials by the end of 2007. The guns will be upgraded to a 45 caliber standard, and not the 52 caliber reported earlier, and will have an enhanced range. The increased range will be accomplished by replacing the barrel & breechblock and strengthening the undercarriage. Tata Power is hoping to work with India's state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) to upgrade the guns, as the latter was given all the blueprints and technical details of the howitzer by Bofors during the original 1987 purchase.

DRDO with ARDE will research on metallurgy and deign mainly of barrel and the complex breech, Rest is OFB technical advice..
Isnt it an idiocy not to make the remaining guns even after purchasing the licence..
this is a good decision.. hope more will follow..
The payment of License was paid in 87 but due to kickbacks the documents were never issued to IA, It was only then when ban was lifted in 2001 and the required documents were provided to do necessary upgrades..
So should we expect Bhim to get back on track should Denel be de-blacklisted ?
I had a chat with a DRDO guy in DEFEXPO abt T6 turret, He told that it will be activated once the ban is removed, But i doubt that..
What can be done is to start a fresh project based on T6 experience and BMP-2 SPGH, with this 155mm 45cal barrel..

The country’s only manufacturer of large caliber guns, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has been approved to develop 155 mm artillery guns by the Indian Army. “Somewhere in October 2011, OFB had received the mandate to develop 155 mm caliber artillery gun by the Army,” informed RK Tiwari, PRO of the Gun Carriage Factory at Jabalpur, on a query from Frontier India.“There will be 2 prototypes of the gun and is scheduled to be delivered by December 2012. The guns will be of caliber 155 mm 39 caliber and 155 mm 45 caliber,” he said.Regarding the participation of private sector in the project, RK Tiwari said “we are working on 3 areas. The first is the inhouse development, which is being carried out now. The OFB Headquarter is working on the tie-ups from Indian industries. The third is the user itself, which has the long experience with the 155 mm gun. OFB has been manufacturing various facets of the 155mm gun and it is confident of the project.”On the question of the specifications of the guns, the spokesman said that the final specs will be frozen by June 2012.
