Pentagon Inspector General Contacts Secretary Of The Navy About Kerry Awards

Reacts to Investigation Request by Judicial Watch

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, announced today that the Inspector General (“IG”) of the Department of Defense has informed the Secretary of the Navy of Judicial Watch’s “formal complaint and request for investigation, determination and final disposition of the awards granted to Lieutenant (junior grade) John Forbes Kerry, U.S. Naval Reserve.”

The Defense Department IG cited Section 8(d) of the Inspector General Act of 1978, which states: “. . . the IG of the Department of Defense shall expeditiously report suspected or alleged violations of chapter 47 of title 10, United States Code (Uniform Code of Military Justice), to the Secretary of the military department concerned or the Secretary of Defense.”

On August 18, 2004, Judicial Watch filed a complaint and request for investigation and final disposition of awards granted to Kerry with the Inspectors General of the Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy, as well as the Chief of Naval Operations and the Navy’s Board of Decorations and Medals. See the complaint and the Department of Defense IG letter by clicking here.

On Tuesday, August 31, 2004, Judicial Watch called upon Senator Kerry to remove the Silver Star citation from his political campaign Internet site pending a review of the granting of the award by the U.S. Navy. Senator Kerry’s political Internet site displays a document listing a “Silver Star with Combat ‘V.’” The Combat “V” device is never awarded with the nation’s third highest award for heroism. A U.S. Navy spokesperson has reportedly stated: “The Navy has never issued a ‘Combat V’ to anyone for a Silver Star.” Additionally, former Navy Secretary John Lehman was quoted with respect to the Silver Star citation as saying: “It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me.”

“We hope this is the beginning of an actual investigation of the legitimacy of Senator Kerry’s awards by the Navy and the Pentagon,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

What if it turns out he didn't really deserve a Silver star? That would mean he could base his entire campaign on being a war hero. Especially since his purple hearts were boo-boos.

George W. Bush has some smooth sailing ahead.

I think that it should be done, particularly after some people who served alongside him questioned rather or not he should have gotten the medals.

But i dont think it should be politicized to the level that it is.

This is idiotic. As far as I can tell, the 'potential scandal' here is that, in the official navy citation for Kerry's silver star, some clerk accidently added a mention of a combat 'V' (which Kerry has on his Bronze star, but which is never given for the silver star).

What could judicial watch be hoping to uncover her, beyond a typo?

If the Navy provides evidence of misconduct I'll accept it. The question is, if they come back and say that the award stands and the rest is just clerical issues.... will others accept that?

I still won't "accept" it until I am positive he rightfully won it. Some people say they were under fire, more say they weren't. I'd like a solid explenation of that too. Then I would accept it.

I just hope Kerry keeps talking about it. It's seemed to work for him so far.

Sure, I'd accept that....but if it comes back that, like many suspect, he doctored his own records etc, then clear a spot on the floor for me to roll around and laugh as all the Huck Mucus Warrior Code B.S. goes swirling down the drain taking Kerry with it...

Well scm77, the correct term should be 'earned.' I being in the National Guard, I don't see myself winning the ARCOM for something I achieved, I earned the ARCOM for something I achieved.

But all terms aside, I just have to say if John Kerry's medals are all reviewed, I think those purple hearts but one (I think one he was really wounded by the enemy), and that silver star is going 'bye bye.'

The Bronze Star on the other hand, I don't think it will be going 'bye bye' but some rumor said he never earned that neither.

I'll accept it either way. Fog of War makes reporting the actions and timing of a battle difficult.

If the Navy ajusts the citations, so be it. Doesn't change a thing to me.

I think it's about time the Pentagon asked for Bush's National Guard records.

I really can´t understand why does Bush supporters try so hard to f*ck up Kerry´s presence in Vietnam. I sincerely don´t know if he diserverd those purple hearts or not, but at least he WAS THERE. On the other hand Bush served in the ANG as way to stay in the US and not go to Vietnam, and hell, even I have more flying hours then he has!

I think that its idiotic to criticise Kerry in that way knowing that Bush was far worst on that matter. C´mom. Try to use some construtive critics not these so called "foda critics".

Please, help yourself. Even your parents, I'm sure there is a group discount, just end it.

Why and how can you continue?

Mobster, have you noticed how not a single person here likes you. In fact, you are probably one of the most reviled people on this forum. You never seem to be able to contribute other than by debasing and posting photos which speak far less than 1000 words, you've never actually tried to seriously discuss an issue, and you invariably fail to write more than a paragraph without hurling insults or trying to convince other of your supposed superiority. Grow up and meet people eye to eye, instead of eye to big toe - or for god sakes leave!
