Hit Argentina where it hurts – in the wallet

Did you know that your taxes are supporting loans going to Argentina? As President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner continues to make waves over the sovereignty of the Falklands, the British Government continues to vote through billions of pounds in international aid to her country, primarily through the World Bank and the EU. According to a poll by ComRes, of those few British adults who are aware of such expenditure, barely 6 per cent support it.

Although I have no problem with the Argentine people, I object to Madam Botox berating and slandering us at every turn, and waging defacto economic warfare on a tiny island population, while all the time using aid and loans we vote through to prop up her regime.

    Link to the petition.

we could always give argentina the dutch antilles: 6 islands, 1000 square kilmeters, desert and jungle climates, no natural recoures oh yeah and a population of just over 300.000 lazy people who would love to get away from the colonial dutch.
And Argentina gets along well with Chavez who is claiming the islands, so you guys can figure something out.

I've spent most of my life on Aruba, one of those desert rocks with nothing to do but windsurfing, so i have the right to bitch about the islands and their people

We have actually given billions of pounds in aid directly to Argentina in the period 1990 to 2002, and continue to spend UK tax-payers money sponsoring various development programmes in Argentina - post-natal medical care, and *drumroll* anti-corruption programmes being two that I can recall (though from the look of it those escaped the attentions of Sun and Telegraph journalists.

Until 2014 we will continue to give development aid to Argentina through the EU. Only 3 months ago it was decided that the EU should stop.

The figure given to Argentina annually by the EU and World Bank is around $2bn. The IMF also holds an emergency reserve of $7.4bn for Argentina. All three of these organisations have the UK tax-payer as a major contributer, and the UK Govt as (among others of course) an approving authority.

It's laughable in my opinion, proposed by people who clearly have little or no undestanding of the engineering complexity of such vessels.

loans to the Argentine government? official programs? NGO's? please be more specific.

Argentina has no debts with the IMF and the WB.

Not surprising seen as how a nuclear reactor costs about the same as a diesel sub.

Why on earth would Argentina build SSNs? A domestic SSN would likely be vastly inferior to a foreign bought SSK, since Argentina have no submarine industry or construction experience (that I know of). Sticking a reactor in a sub isn't like waving a wand and say Abracadabra - PRESTO SUPER SUB!!! Sticking a primitive reactor in a sub is a big disadvantage in every aspect except mobility, range and the ability to stay submerged. Argentina would be far better off shopping for a nice long ranged SSK with AIP.

Google it. I'm not going to spend my evening doing it for you. We're not talking about loans, it's about aid.

I believe the proposal was to fit a civil nuclear reactor into the Santa Fe, a TR-1700 which whose contstruction was abandoned in 1996 (started in the mid 80's I think).
It's a recipe for disaster, but SSN's are flashy, and Brazil's getting them....
