Duisburg indeed has some parts that make Detroit look like a nice suburb.
Duisburg actually is the first city in Germany that has started bulldozing a whole part of the city just a few weeks ago in the norther part to transform it into a park.
Though the overall crime rate still is rather low for a mid-sized German city as far as I know.
There are some pre-dominantly Turkish/Kurdish parts of the city where many people say they would never go at night... but for the most part the streets are actually empty at night and its more of a myth that anything major would happen to you when you walk there.. at least as far as I see it.
As for the religious stuff... I have not heard of this before.. but I do not care that much for local news. Might be a bit exaggerated as has been said... the nazis probably do not care much either. Just a few months ago the police even said that there were no "active" nazis in Duisburg... until a tv or newspaper report more or less told them that there is some kind of grouß / gang with about 50 members or so... and afterwards the police said something like.. ah yes... that might be trueBut the only thing I have heard of them was that they put up crosses and candles in a city park during a night to commemorate Rudolf Hess or something like that.. and the police did not even notice... or care...

Well.. Duisburg has had a actually rather - because of its architeccture - well known Synagogue for quite a few years now without any issues from the neo nazi (or muslim) side so far as I am aware of

**** that, kids need to be dragged to their parents by the ear and the parents need to be given the ultimatum, sort this out or pack your bags, they learnt to be intolerant somewhere, its a reflection on their upbringing and the parents are accountable. If the parents are letting them listen intolerant lectures from the Imam or other source of hate speech its poor form, being German shouldnt be a right, it should be a priviledge. It is for me.
