Mr. Peterson, an easygoing man who looks down when he thinks and smiles sheepishly when he offers an opinion, looked down after completing the story of his own dependence on the safety net.
“It’s hard to beat up on the government when they’ve been so good to you,” he finally said. “I’ve never really thought about it, I guess.”This is an article about people in the more conservative parts of the country depending more on government money, than people in the more liberal parts. The government safety net was created to keep Americans from abject poverty, but the poorest households no longer receive a majority of government benefits. A secondary mission has gradually become primary: maintaining the middle class from childhood through retirement. The share of benefits flowing to the least affluent households, the bottom fifth, has declined from 54 percent in 1979 to 36 percent in 2007, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis published last year.
Bottom line, blue states are subsidising red states. People who are most voiciferously decrying government spending, depend on it the most.
They have an AWESOME interactive map, which shows where most of the government money is spent. It's really nice.

"Income Support" and "Unemployment Insurance" is VERY interesting.
Didnt realize the 5 boroughs of NYC are Red Staters.... So is Philidelphia, hmmmmm
Very Interesting, thanks for that.
Sometimes I wonder how much of the anger at countries like Greece as just warped frustration at ourselves, because we know whats coming.
A major crisis is on the way with the retirement of the baby boomers.
Not only dowthere, it's everywhere! I heard a number of cases when legal immigrants come into the USA in their 50-60 yo and cannot find jobs due to no English and the only option for them to claim mental disability. They contributed 0 to the country but draw a lot of benefits that others worked for.
I thought my county did pretty good up until unemployment... Go Chicagoland...
