Thumbs up German navy detained 8 Somali pirates

On Wednesday, 22 February 2012, naval forces from the German replenishment oiler "Berlin" repelled a pirate attack on a large commercial tanker in the Gulf Aden and captured eight Somali pirates and their boat.

When the German vessel received a distress call from the tanker, they sent two Sea King helicopters to the site and the door gunners fired warning shots at the Somali boat. Thereupon the Somalis cancelled their assualt on the tanker and were detained by a German boarding team.

Two pirates were injured in that process and received treatment on board the Berlin. The pirate skiff has also been taken on board by the Berlin. The Berlin has only arrived in the Gulf of Aden one week ago and already there's business. Nothing is known yet about any further procedure.

    Good job!

I'd say the planks of that boat will make some nice souvenirs for the crew... That thing won't make it to a museum...

Update: after interrogating the Somalis and searching their skiff there was apparently no evidence of intended piracy to be found at all. The eight sailors have therefore been set ashore at Xabo, Somalia.

In a related incident, French frigate "Aconit" searched a dhow and couldn't find anything suspiscious either.
