Oh I do, and I even know what it's like for the not so average ones that do buy gas. I was just trying to shine my torch on an ignorant comment.

I think I read somewhere California has the highest average gas prices in the US, but I'm not really sure.

I usually swap car's with my mother anytime I go anywhere further than downtown cause she drives a hybrid. My car gets like 18 miles per gallon with the way I usually drive it, 'bout 21 mpg if I'm on the freeway. The hybrid gets like 40mpg or something like that (it's an SUV).
I should've pointed out that the AUS$ 5.50 per gallon is for 98 octane , I will only get 95 in a pinch

I was talking to a bloke the other day who works at a 'peak load' power station near here. He told me if they run the turbines on diesel they use around 1000l/minute. Do the maths...

    Crazy isn't it.
My old tub used to use a ton of diesel per hour per engine at all ahead flank.
    It had 4 engines.....

At least you have the option. All the gas stations around here are 87, 89 and 91. I usually add a dash of octane booster when I fill up because I have a few aftermarket parts on my car. Pretty expensive, but I want my car to last longer.

Same everywhere, everything goes up directly on transport costs and secondly on wage inflation to deal with transport costs. I think in a few years you will see far more small diesel cars, the trend of rising fuel prices is here to stay, we better get used to it by buying smaller more efficient cars.

The 'weakest' fuel we can get here is 91. Then it goes 95, 98 and 100 (if you know where to go). You used to be able to buy avgas at a couple of places, but you can't anymore.

Ohhh, aviation gasoline. I thought you meant like "average gasoline". haha

What I'm wondering is why the difference in octane levels? Is ours low or is yours just really high?

    Arrow

The octane rating in America and Canada is calculated differently than the rest of the world. Our number comes out four to five points lower for the same gasoline in the rest of the world. So our 87 octane regular would be 92 octane in Australia or Europe, though it is the same stuff.

Ahh, I see. Us 'merican's sure are silly. Always trying to do things differently.

Since nearly every service and product involves gasoline or oil, then yes they do indirectly.

The third world is extremely sensitive to fuel costs as it effects food costs directly. Spending 50% of your income on food is cruel bitch.
Spending a a bit more to fill up your Bush/Cheney stickered 6litre SUV is a first world problem.

Yeah majority of indians don't have a car because it is expensive to maintain and operate. But many indians can afford a bike which costs some 800$ or less and gives a mileage of 80km/lit.
    Corrected.

And we pay roughly around 6-7 dollars per gallon here.
