Nancy - the Springbok antelope who went to war in WW1.
Nancy - the Springbok antelope - the mascot of a South African regiment is the only animal in military history to be accorded full funeral honours and to be buried in an Allied war cemetery. Her death was announced in General Orders – probably the only occasion in military history that this was done. All parades were cancelled. There were only a few of the original members of the regiment still on active service and they were detailed to form the firing party.
She is truly a great Springbok and that is what makes me extremely proud to be what I'm - a Springbok!. The name Springbok is what South Africans used throughout WW1/ WW2/ Korea and is truly unique. Enjoy!
