Take the last mod. The ingame stuff has nothing to do with US Army SF and Brit units won't get you any further either. If you want to stick to the 80's timeframe, ALICE gear is what you're looking for.
Hi,
I play a game called ARMA 2 (which I'm sure quite a few of you are accustomed to). It's a "light" version of the battlefield simulator the US Army and other armed forces around the world use.
I'm currently creating a mission based on a 1980's SF unit operating in a woodland environment. I want to get the look of the units and the weapon selection right, but within constraints as I can't create new weapons/units myself - I'll be using other peoples user-created content. Complete accuracy isn't really an option, but I'd like to get the "look and feel" as close as possible.
The photo I really like is this one which I snatched from the "random old CAG" thread. I believe it's delta operators during Operation Acid Gambit:

Couple questions:
1) Which weapons are they using - are those silenced M16's or M4's? Were aimpoint type scopes available during the 80's, or were ironsights primarily used? There is a wealth of user created rifles available for the game - if I have a rough idea of the attachments, camo and model of the weapons that are used during the period, I can hunt down the closest mod available.
2) Is the camo woodland? Doing some digging, the closest matches I've found are below. Which of these would closest match an 80's delta SF operator? I can use a mix of the units below if neccessary.
1) In-game USMC Force-Recon Model example 1. Good, but not woodland. Not actually sure which camo this is?:

2) User-Made Addon, SAS/SBS Operators. I like these but they seem very generic:

3) User-Made Operation Flashpoint mod. My favourites of the lot:

Pics aren't great but hopefully they convey the details.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Thanks mate.
Out of curiousity - would you say first two are accurate reflections of modern 'Force Recon'/'UKSF'?
On to weapons. What we talking - silenced M4A1 suppressed, sans rail?
The M4 didn't exist back in the 80s - they'd be using Colt 723s, 727s, or 733s. Aimpoints were around, but they were different versions than what is available now. Individuals might have fixed gangster grips to their rifles, but rails weren't common back then.
Cheers guys. I'm a complete amateur so don't have a clue on specific kit/camo in the various time periods. Thanks for the help. Will try and hunt down some CAR-15 models for the game
Yes, in the days before rails some would use tape or hose clamps to affix flashlights to their rifles. Scope mounts with early aimpoints would be attached to carry handles. Even in 1997 when I was on active duty with the USMC the Recon guys in our MEU used duct tape and cut up bits of sleeping mats to attache the big Mag lights to their rifles; almost as big as a 203.
OFP mod isn't bad, but it is based on the units in the original OFP, not what was really used in the 80's.
If you want the most realistic mod for 1980's units especially cold war stuff, you need Vilas's Project 85. It is sort of buggy, but easily represents the most comprehensive and accurate addon pack of 1980's units from the US, Britain, W. Germany, E. Germany, USSR, Poland, and 80's versions of some of the fictional arma and OFP nations.
Vilas's stuff has all the models and weapons you could ever possibly want from that era, including a large selection of 80's SF weapons like XM177's, CAR15's, Colt Commando's, MP5's, M60E3's, several different versions of early M249's and Minimi's, the list goes on, its all in there.

OK this is OT, but why are the late 70s and early 80s mods so popular is FPS games now?
I guess Twilight 2000 was just 20 years ahead of its time.
I would say as others have suggest Project 85 by Vilas is the one to go for, both for accuracy and shear scale of what it involves, ACE2 Mod likewise might add in a bunch of kit additionally that could have been utilized back then such as for example Claymores, Mines, Flare Mine etc
Probably because of the fact that we've done the modern era to death and many people have an aversion to future stuff...
Going back to the good old days is always good too back when it was simpler(How many high intensity fair fights are there these days?)
