Default Iran’s Underground Nuclear Sites Not Immune to US Bunker-Busters - Experts Say

Western spy agencies for years have kept watch on a craggy peak in northwest Iran that houses of one the world’s most unusual nuclear sites. Known as Fordow, the facility is built into mountain bunkers designed to withstand aerial attack. Iran’s civil-defense chief has declared the site “impregnable.”

But impregnable it is not, say U.S. military planners who are increasingly confident of their ability to deliver a serious blow against Fordow, should the president ever order an attack.

Western analysts believe Fordow has not only the protection afforded by natural rock but also additional hardening that draws on North Korean bunker-building expertise. A report last week by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, said the facility was believed to include multiple “blast-proof doors, extensive divider walls, hardened ceilings, 20-centimeter-thick concrete walls, and double concrete ceilings with earth filled between layers.”

When was the last time bunker busters have been used in warfare?

Iraq in 2003? Or were some used in Libya?

They've been testing them in the desert.

Yet as a matter of physics, Fordow remains far more vulnerable than generally portrayed, said current and former military and intelligence analysts. [...]

“Hardened facilities require multiple sorties,” said a former senior intelligence official who has studied the formerly secret Fordow site and agreed to discuss sensitive details of U.S. strike capabilities on the condition of anonymity. “The question is, how many turns do you get at the apple?”

U.S. confidence has been reinforced by training exercises in which bombers assaulted similar targets in deeply buried bunkers and mountain tunnels, the officials and experts said.

The question is how many times can the hit same point before CAP catches up with them.

Note after the first or second bomb, the target is going to obscured by smoke and dust. Unless you some computer and Link 16 magic.

Modern targeting pods mean smoke and dust isn't a huge problem. IIRC you could send the impact point over to other aircraft via data and they can hit it themselves after. I think?

its not like the facility is self healing...you can wait an hour two for the dust to settle...hell you could probably wait days. what are the iranians going to do...move the material out in the open?

Of course they're not immune. Even Cheyenne Mountain is vulnerable, so is every bunker. Just depends on what kinds of bombs you use and your plan of attack. All you really need to do is blow up the multiple entrances and their nuclear enrichment is going nowhere fast.

Let me guess. You are the guy with agenda here. Two of three post - troll short sentences about Russia. Were you banned recently and this is your new account?

If not - stop trolling, start to write on topic, start to write something with quality. If yes - it was nice knowing you...

The Iranian can generate smoke during long period of time to prevent a second hit on the dame point.

Make something militarily impregnable and its not long till something is designed to defeat it. I've always said that the human race are the most inventive when they are trying to kill/destroy something or escape from somewhere.

It's not like its going anywhere. GPS guided weapons will not mind smoke.

Correct if I'm wrong please.....but isn't GPS not accurate enough to go pinpoint & angled on a weak spot like ventilation access like laser would? I assume that's what the smoke would be for as that would the only way to take the place down with standard ordinance.
