Default Atheist group targets Muslims, Jews with ‘myth’ billboards in Arabic and Hebrew

(CNN) – The billboard wars between atheists and believers have raged for years now, especially around New York City, and a national atheist group is poised to take the battle a step further with billboards in Muslim and Jewish enclaves bearing messages in Arabic and Hebrew.

American Atheists, a national organization, will unveil the billboards Monday on Broadway in heavily Muslim Paterson, New Jersey and in a heavily Jewish Brooklyn neighborhood, immediately after the Williamsburg Bridge.

“You know it’s a myth … and you have a choice,” the billboards say. The Patterson version is in English and Arabic, and the Brooklyn one in English and Hebrew. To the right of the text on the Arabic sign is the word for God, Allah. To the right of the text on the Hebrew sign is the word for God, Yahweh.

Dave Silverman, the president of American Atheists, said the signs are intended to reach atheists in the Muslim and Jewish enclaves who may feel isolated because they are surrounded by believers.

“Those communities are designed to keep atheists in the ranks,” he says. “If there are atheists in those communities, we are reaching out to them. We are letting them know that we see them, we acknowledge them and they don't have to live that way if they don’t want to.”

They should last about 2 weeks in Williamsburg before getting painted over one night, and pretty sure wont go over well in Paterson either.

meh. I don't think that's necessarily a good way to convince people their religion is wrong. If someone walked up and told me I'm going to hell because there I don't believe in God I'm not going to be any more likely to follow their way of thinking.

I know. Its only going to increase animosity b/w atheists and believers even more. In a nation where religion of all types are accepted under the law, people would think that it should be okay to follow the old phrase "To each their own." rather than prove what ideology is better.

No kidding, it is just naive (nice word for stupid) and confrontational. Maybe it is really a money raising event. See we do doing something, now give us your money.

Their stated purpose isn't to change anyone's mind but to communicate to people who are already non believers.

Uh oh. I don't really understand my fellow Atheist's who go around doing sh!t like this. Just going to make the people they're trying to convince more fervent believers in whatever religion they belong to. These people are just as bad as the loudmouth religious nuts holding up signs calling gay people "faggots" and telling them they're going to hell.

I personally think if you want to convince someone there is no god, all you really can do is educate them and let them decide for themselves. To religious folks, this is just harassment/antagonization.

I wonder if Silverman actually believes that?

I think I would avoid grouping myself in with those fruit cakes. Maybe they figured out how WBC makes it money, they can do it to.

Doesn't sound like they are proselytising in quite the way you make out.
