LONDON — The U.S. decision to refocus its military and political effort in the Asia Pacific region raises fundamental questions about the British government’s future relationship with its top ally, according to a new parliamentary national security strategy committee.
“We call on the [British] Government to reflect deeply on the long-term implications of the geographical and functional shifts in U.S. policy that are now taking place,” said the joint House of Commons and House of Lords committee in a report scheduled to be released March 8.
I'd rather stick with the Americans than go with most of Europe.
About time too !
You can ram the 'Special / Essential relationship up your ar$e !
Friends, NATO Allies yes. Cosy Political Propaganda = Nein Danke !
Buggger! - Friends with europe
heheheh, what can i say....best of luck for the future!
Britain wants to play with their EU buddies? That's a new one.
I don't think the interests will become to divergent, but I agree with him that now is the time to think about the future. It is true for UK and for the rest of Europe. Act rather than react.“It raises fundamental questions if our pre-eminent defense and security relationship is with an ally who has interests which are increasingly divergent from our own,”
That's for the best. The sooner it happens the better for all.
I don't think the UK will alter its defence relationship with the US at all. Who else shares nuclear tech & things like Tomahawks etc with the United States?
This report will simply be recognition that US eyes will move away from Europe, and the UK/France defence agreement is a part of that. I actually think the UK government has its eye on the ball in this regard.
'' Welcome to the Fold, finally "
Yes, because Britain has in no way played any part in the security of Western Europe since 1945
Asia is a powder keg like Europe was in the early 1900s. Shifting that to our attention could help an important economic area from going up in flames and sending the world into another massive depression.
^^ that has being said about other EU members, but not about the UK, IIRC.... "If the U.S. is moving towards viewing Europe as a producer rather than a consumer of security, and reducing its capability to mount long term stabilization missions, it raises more questions as to what we can expect from the U.S. and what the U.S. expects from the U.K."
^^ Interesting. The committee strongly criticized the government’s assertion that there will be no reduction in the U.K.’s influence on the world stage as “wholly unrealistic in the medium to long term.”
