Santorum lands Southern primary wins in Mississippi, Alabama

Rick Santorum ensured that the Republican nominating battle will drag on, possibly into the spring and beyond, after pulling off a pair of victories in the Deep South on Tuesday – the last big night of primaries until April.

The former Pennsylvania senator edged out his opponents in both Mississippi and Alabama, allowing him to build the case that he is the “conservative” alternative to Mitt Romney over Newt Gingrich.

Romney did not go home empty handed, clinching a victory in the Hawaii caucuses by a wide margin. He took home 45 percent of the vote, with over 80 percent of precincts reporting. Santorum trailed with 25 percent.

Romney also won the small Republican caucus in American Samoa. He picked up all nine delegates in the contest in the U.S. territory located 2,300 miles south of Hawaii.

Santorum may be a yankee but he doesn't act like one. He didn't pretend to be southern and make condescending statements about how liking grits and fried catfish made him an "unofficial southerner."

Are you saying one of them did? I know I heard Romney try to affect a Southern accent and talk about grits, but he ended up just proving how much of a yank he is. I didn't hear him claiming to be an unnoficial Southerner though.

Pascagoula, MS -- Less than stellar poll numbers heading into next week's primaries in Southern states did not stop Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from branding himself an "unofficial Southerner" in Mississippi.

Romney joked he is "learning to say y'all and like grits" to the nearly 150 Mississippians gathered to hear him speak at the Port of Pascagoula, where he nabbed the endorsement of Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

Romney was trying to be humorous but he of course just comes across as wooden and unbelievable.

I don't know what being a "Yankee" has to do with anything. I'd be more concerned with the fact that most of the primary voters were drooling inbred morons that think Jesus rode a dinosaur 5,000 years ago. There is no way to adequately pander to that crowd unless you're prepared to execute a Muslim and f*ck your sister whilst quoting Bible verses on stage.
