Well the food for aid deal with North Korea for a moratorium on long range missile test launches and nuclear testing that the North a week earlier said they would not violate and would follow it, has just been shredded with this statement by the North. If the State Department is still drawing up plans for the deal the white house needs to scrap it since this announced launching of the long range missile is a violation clear and simple.

Doing a short trajectory simulation from the launch site and the designated flight path of the rocket, there is a very high chance that rocket stages will fall into waters well past the North Korea NLL and land in waters claimed by the South.
This could be the next test of the Norths of the Souths resolve from saying they will not stand the North violating their territorial waters and then the North dropping rockets stages into the Souths water as the North conducts a test of their ballistic missile.

What do you think the odds of them pulling this off would be? Didn't their last "ICBM" test crash into the ocean after only a few seconds?

Hopefully Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un is the satellite. Too bad they probably don't have a capsule big enough to fit him.
The missile is a Taepodong-2 heavy launch ballistic missile. here is a good indicator of the missiles range

Jokes aside, a successful long range rocket test would show the North has overcome technical problems with their long range missile development program and ability to stage rocket stages would increase the threat posed by their long range missile program. Also as I said it is a covert way of violating the NLL and getting away with it.
Think they'll be able to overcome those technical problems? Their last launch was a miserable failure. Any chance they've gotten some assistance from Iran?
If they had fueled and launched the last rocket right away its believed they would have had a better success but from current reports they fueled the rocket and let it sit for a week while they kept tensions high and played the West on if they would or not fire the rocket. one has to realize that the Taepodong-2 fuel is very corrosive and can eat away at seals when left sitting..
Also yes it would be cheaper for the North to send a monkey into orbit first before trying to put a satellite in orbit for the first try, North Korea is short on resources and cash and the amount of time and effort that goes into building even a basic satellite costs a good amount.
Ah, I see. So basically, just sabre-rattling. They don't seem to have that much expertise to mass-produce these things, right? Leaving corrosive liquid-fuel in a rocket is an amateur mistake. Even most rocket hobbyist's would know that.
