They keep bringing up the "Stand Your Ground" law and it doesn't remotely apply in this case.

They also keep acting like the kid is the one screaming for "help" on the 911 tape. It could very well be Zimmerman, after he provoked the entire incident, started the altercation and then got his ass kicked, and had to use a gun.

Zimmerman is a clown. He's the Gladys Kravitz of his neighborhood. He should have been taken into custody immediately. He belongs in jail.

Rev Al should probably back off a little on the rallies and the incendiary generalizations. Some of us still remember Tawana Brawley...

I find it odd that the DoJ just picks what it wants to pursue and in other cases, ho hum, shrug shoulders.

Well the local PD sure as f*ck didn't do their job. Why is it odd? Spit it out, I'm sure there's some conspiracy. Are you worried that the DoJ initiated this because it's a black kid or some sh*t? I think the kid deserves some justice or at least a cursory glance. Hell, we had a thread on here recently about a dude in NH that caught some prick burglar in the act of robbing a neighbors house, he discharged his firearm into the ground and held him for the cops. When the cops got there they took his weapon and took him into custody too until it was all sorted. Grow up.

The shooter's made 46 911 calls in 14 months. I've made 1 my entire life. DOJ has to investigate...no one else seemed to give a sh*t in Florida.

So this guy instigates a fight. Loses it. Then shoots the opponent to death. And goes free without even being taken in to custody?
This is in no way a flame attempt, but am I missing something? Either a major part of this story has a hole in it, or the Feds should clamp down on the PD. Hard.

Yeah, the locals reaction to this is strange. But I'm not ready to vilify them until the investigation takes place.

Yeah, hopefully, for all involved (the dead is already dead) is that there really is something amiss in this story. Otherwise more then just one head should roll.

Glad the feds are looking into this. There are some instances where the local authorities are simply not trustworthy. As others have said I will reserve judgement until more information comes out, but it's looking that way more and more.

I had a neighbor like that. Moved into an apartment complex two blocks from a major university, and bitched everytime someone played music or talked after 9:00 pm.

Rest in Peace to the kid.
If Zimmerman was guilty/negligent, I hope he pays the price.

I have only read open source news stories on this, and I don't see what rises to the level of a DOJ investigation. Certainly there appear to be issues with the investigation by the local PD, but unless there is something that rises to the level of a concerted effort/attempt to violated the decedent's civil rights by the PD, the outside eyes on this should fall to the State AG's office or the FDLE, both of which are more than capable of running this type of case.

A man with a gun shot an unarmed kid who was walking home. And the locals didn't see it appropriate to even bring the shooter in.

    Let's start there.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the reason "Stand Your Ground" came up initially was someone from the local PD/DA citing that as their reason for doing absolutely no investigation whatsoever.

Default Neighborhood watch leader may have uttered racial slur before shooting

The self-appointed neighborhood watch leader who gunned down an unarmed black teen may have uttered a racial slur before the shooting as he spoke with Florida police dispatchers, WFTV.com reported.

The tape of George Zimmerman’s 911 phone call is unclear, but he may have said “f---ing c--ns,” under his breath as he followed Trayvon Martin. The dispatcher told him he did not have to follow the teen, but the confrontation took place moments later.

I'm not saying they haven't messed this up 8 ways from Sunday. I think both his self defense story and the PD's handling (or maybe more appropriate mishandling) of the whole thing are dodgy as all get out. I have also seen cases where the locals punt stuff to the DA/Prosecutor's office for a bunch of reasons, too. The irregularities should first be monitored by the state big boys, the AG and the FDLE. They will know early on if it's something that should warrant a Federal interest.
