SJ2, well said. It would be nice if people choose to take the high road. Maybe because of all the smearing a candidate and their family has to go threw is why we end up with the candidates that we do and not those who are very capable.

I agree, the media is a big part of the problem. Excitement sells time. A anything go mud slinging fight will gather more viewers than a get together of people working together to fix a problem. So the other part of the problem is the population, that falls for this stuff.
The news media just don't get it: We're not losing interest because of the lack of drama, we're losing interest because of the lack of substance.

I used to say during the Bush years that Americans tend to forget the man is American, and many treat him like an enemy over a fellow American. I guess the same is also true of Obama.
I am still taken aback how polarised people on this forum from the US are, whether it is to do with politics, economics, or what have you. I find long stints of arguing/reading this part of the forum can really skew your opinion after a while, as there is definitely a pessimistic/negative theme from many posters here which quite often doesn't reflect reality. But stepping back for a week or two can help bring back fresh perspectives.
This forum is still much higher quality than many others (spend time elsewhere and the difference is immediately obvious).
