^ Why don't you guys just post captions? I just don't get it, even if you haven't got an accompanying description, at least let us know what that pic is about (i.e. aircraft model, what's happening in that specific pic, when was it taken) and if you haven't got the slightest idea what your image shows: ASK! Most posters just use mp.net as an image-dump, posting vast amounts of pictures without providing any kind of context, most of these posts and threads are pretty pointless IMHO.

    Rant over.

Btw., the caption for that pic reads:
Boeing B-47B rocket-assisted take off on April 15, 1954. (U.S. Air Force photo)

(I only tweaked the color because the original looked like ass. Lockheed Martin just posted it to their Photobucket. No description.)

The second photo is the NASA research variant of the old U2. This photograph was taken, unless I am seriously mistaken, at Reykjavik airport in Iceland. Reykjavik airport started life as a RAF base in WWII and my father served there. The occasion of the photo was two of these planes landing for fuel. When they left one did this low flypast for the press. Interestingly there is currently one of these NASA U2 planes in Reykjavik conducting research on global warming and glacial shrinkage.

It's not any kind of U-2. It's a WB-57 which use to be an RB-57F Canberra. Martin built the original Canberras under license from English Electric.

The 1st type asked about is a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in use by NASA.
