In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the CIA provided Lockheed P2V-7Us to the Republic of China’s 34th Black Bat squadron and Lockheed U-2s to the 35th Black Cat squadron.
Opposing the Taiwanese squadrons, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force was determined to stop the penetrations of mainland China’s airspace.
Han Decai, already one of the best-known airmen in China due to his Korean War victories, was appointed deputy commander of a MiG-17 squadron tasked with that mission.
