Default I Was There: Bring Down the Spyplane

    MIG-17 vs. Lockheed U-2.

    By Bob Bergin
Air & Space magazine, May 2012

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the CIA provided Lockheed P2V-7Us to the Republic of China’s 34th Black Bat squadron and Lockheed U-2s to the 35th Black Cat squadron.

Opposing the Taiwanese squadrons, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force was determined to stop the penetrations of mainland China’s airspace.

Han Decai, already one of the best-known airmen in China due to his Korean War victories, was appointed deputy commander of a MiG-17 squadron tasked with that mission.

    A really interesting article
"Neptune vs MiG-17" sounds like a done deal to armchair generals but you really get to appreciate the difficulties of 60s nighttime flying reading that.

    You're both very welcome

    A little bit of history.

    From the article:

"To hit the U-2 at its altitude, the missile practically had to be launched from almost directly underneath its flight path."
