Even though the piracy is a major problem on the east coast of Africa for African states , do not expect the AU to welcome this with open arms!
The AU is still wiping off the egg on their collective faces after the Lybia debacle. Colonial cards will be in this game...
Re ATALANTA:
Around the globe there were 439 recorded incidents of piracy and armed robbery last year, with 802 crew members taken hostage. Forty-five vessels were hijacked, 176 boarded and 113 fired upon. Eight crew members were killed.The EU has been considering expanding its anti-piracy operation off the Horn of Africa since the end of 2011. It wants the new rules of engagement to enable naval personnel " to destroy pirate logistics on the beach, not deployment in the country"
Re Dutch part in ATALANTA:
The Netherlands is part of the so-called Atalanta mission, an EU effort consisting of five to ten naval ships used to prevent the hijacking of merchant vessels or to engage in rescue operations when pirates take merchant crews hostage.
Minister Hillen needs parliamentary support to push his plans through, but, so far, the response has been reticent from the lower house. The cabinet first needs to discuss how many extra naval forces should be deployed before debating the proposal in parliament.
