A similar debate comes up every other year about the flag of the 28th Virginia Infantry that was captured at *****sburg. The Flag is in Minnesota and Virginia wants it back. However, given how that flag was attained, its probably right where it belongs.

Btw, I am not so sure this is comparable to the WW2 situation. I mean, how eager are the Germans to get back a Natzi swastika flag. I can only imagine how embarrassed would Angela Merkel be to receive one, as part of an official ceremony.

That wouldn't happen due to political reasons, but of course there are enough museums, which would take flags and items for exhibitions etc.

My great-great uncle was on Okinawa. He took a Japanese flag off a dead Japanese officer along with his katana. He sold the katana when he got back to the states, but he passed the flag down to me. I would gladly return it to someone in Japan if I knew who the Hell he "liberated it" from...
