Latest- Hijackers are demanding Millions dollars in ransom for the release of the ship. Exact amount is not known yet. Americans revealed that the ship is from a blacklisted shippingliner from Iran. Still there is an on-going operation conducted by the Maldives Coast Guard to resuce the ship.
19:29- Still the ship is in Maldives EEZ. Indian navy and U.S. Naval forces are operating in the area along side with Maldives Coast Guard. A Combined operation to rescue the vessel is underway. Ship is confirmed to be MV Eglantine, Iran-bound Brazilian sugar ship. With 23 crew members.
17:30- According to Coast Guard Hijacked ship is slowing sailing out of Maldives EEZ.
"Most of the times more than one ship operates in the area. So it is a near possibility more ships might be active in the area near the hijacked ship, but we cannot confirm

17:28- Coast Guard confirms that Hijacked ship is an Bolivian Cargo ship.
16:18- Coast Guard ship "313 Huravee" (CG 6) is its on way to the area of the hijacking. Officials said the ship which was hijacked wasn't a Maldivian ship and they believe that no Maldivians were on board the ship, but they cannot verify it and it is hard to determine the identity of the ship as of yet and this is a suspected piracy act.
16:12- Coast Guard officials said this incident occurred 190 miles away from HA. Hoarafushi and it happened during today morning. But the news of the hijacking didn't reach Coast Guard GMDSS until the afternoon. Coast Guard official said this incident occurred 7 miles inside Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

If the ship that is captured really is the one that is pictures of, then it is carrying a $$$$ worth oil rig as deck cargo.
Wonder how much ransom the pirates could get for an oilrig? Probably a new record....
Based on the pictures I believe the ship is the MIGHTY SERVANT 1 carrying the Sevan Brazil (oilrig) from shanghai to Rio de Janeiro.

Good question, Ordie. For that matter, all the Mighty Servant carriers are apparently registered in the Netherlands Antilles, on the other hand Bolivia used to have access to the sea until 1904 and is still claiming maritime rights today. Maybe they're offering cheap ship registries to a port town at Lake Titicaca?

But that is also the only thing in the article that does not match up. The Mighty Servant 1 is really in that area now transporting the Sevan Brazil, and it would be such an easy target, being low and slow in the water.
Wonder if the rig crew is onbord the rig during such transports? If the story is true, the pirates won the jackpot here.....
According to the Maldives Customs, Mighty Servant 1 made a stop at Male just yesterday (link). None of the ships on that list seems to be Bolivian though.
Bolivia, although landlocked, is in fact a nation that offers a flag of convenience. However they have only two dozen or so ships registered. I'm also wondering where the images of the heavy-lift platform with the rig have been coming from. At least the Sun website on the Maldives is now displaying a random pic of a USN cruiser and some vessel that looks like a tanker.
It's out now, the ship is MV Eglantine, IMO 9193202, registered in Bolivia to an Iranian company.

Iranians must be desperate to get sugar from Brazil on an Iranian ship re-flagged as Bolivian, a land-locked country.
