Ok. Bear with me. On the BBC article, at the end of the first paragraph she states "The Far Right Democratic Party or NPD"

In the USA, the far right is ONLY REPUBLICAN, and the left is only Democratic.

My specific question is: What is the difference between the two?

The US of A basically have a two party system even though sometimes a Republican candidate may be more left-leaning than a Democrat, and vice versa. However, we have five parties in our Lower House alone. So its rather difficult to set off American parties against German ones. "Democratic" is used in the original sense of the word here and not meant to denote any certain party.

I care because I vote and I want my vote to be an informed vote. In the USA there is a profound difference between the left and the right. I care to distinguish between them because the Republican Right accuses the Democratic Left of wanting more and bigger Government, when the reality is that the Democratic Left simple wants the Government to do it's frikkin job. Not bigger, not smaller, just do it's job. Ya know, stop signs, police, fire fighters, good schools, good highways. Simple stuff. The stuff that Governments are made of.

Fair enough, but the word "democratic" in Germany's "National Democratic Party" doesn't mean anything. Like I said, in this case "democratic" is used in the original sense of the word and not to denote a connection with the given name of the American Democratic Party or any smiliarities between the two. The German NPD is anything but like your Democrats.

Yeah, not a sympathiser but the focus is always on the Nazis and the Far Right, how about some focus on Germany's other radicals as well, the ones who seem to get a free pass in the media, like the Far Left and to an extent the Radical Islamists. IMO the Far Left is as dangerous as the Far Right, but I guess a bunch of mad Lefties dont sell papers like some Mad Right wingers. As it says at the end of the short "news" report - this is a minority group. There are alot more Left Wingers who are equally violent and idealistic. bit of balance would be nice, so how about the BBC does a report on them too?

I have this arguement with alot of people in Germany. Seems they are happy to ignore the Left wing shenanigans and focus on the Right wing because they are afraid of being seen as going backwards. Yeah, the right wing is there and the violent radicals need to be stopped, but it needs to happen right across the board, and not just with the Right wing.

The right wing carries much more historical significance in Germany though, which is why it seems to be getting a swifter treatment. For that same reason, we also see the BBC writing articles about Naziism in Germany rather than in Belarus, for example. It's much more eye catching and has a higher chance of evoking the desired, emotional response.
