    Default The El Paso Miracle

How can a comparatively poor, high-immigration town that sits across the border from super-violent Ciudad Juarez be one of the safest big cities in America?

By conventional wisdom, El Paso, Texas should be one of the scariest cities in America. In 2007, the city's poverty rate was a shade over 27 percent, more than twice the national average. Median household income was $35,600, well below the national average of $48,000. El Paso is three-quarters Hispanic, and more than a quarter of its residents are foreign-born

HUH and I always thought El Paso was dangerous. Granted I have never spent any major amount of time down there.

Yeah not according to my best friend who is a Border Patrol Agent there. He has a shooting in his neighborhood once or twice a week.

    That's all?

El Paso is paradise compared to East Oakland.

X2 Ordie is right. Oakland is the Detroit of the west coast.

The comparison just with Baltimore for almost as many inhabitants is impressive, 20 vs 200 murders...

And yet violence hasn't spread from Ciuadad Juarez to the other side of the border.

This article is over 3 years old, using data from 5 years ago. Need to update the figures.

Indeed but I would guess it hasn't turned in a craphole over a few years. Makes a good exception on the equation poverty + immigration = violence though.
