Foreign ministry worker arrested for spying for Russia

A 60-year-old civil servant at the foreign affairs ministry has been arrested on charges of selling government information, it emerged at the weekend.
The man was arrested on March 24 and has been remanded in custody for two weeks, the public prosecution department said in a statement.
He is accused of spending seven years passing on information to a couple living in Germany who are alleged to be spies for Russia. They were arrested in October 2011.

During part of the seven-year period, the man was vice consul in Hong Kong, the AD reports on Monday. During that time, he had access to 'highly confidential' information, the paper says. He has been based in The Hague since 2008.
The public prosecution department said it is investigating the exact nature of the information which the man passed to the German couple to see if it is classified as 'state secrets'.
The man is also suspected of money laundering and possessing a weapon.

Piece in the Volkskrant this morning stated the information this guy had access to was deemed sensitive/confidential, but because of his position within the ministry, he did not have access to Classified materials. However, he was planning on getting access to those files as well. In a similar case a while back, a RNLAF pilot was arrested after attempting to sell classified RNLAF documents to a Russian intelligence agency. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
