Default US obesity 'higher than thought'

The obesity problem in the US may be much worse than previously thought, according to researchers.

They said using the Body Mass Index or BMI to determine obesity was underestimating the issue.

Their study, published in the journal PLoS One, said up to 39% of people who were not currently classified as obese actually were.

...They propose changing the thresholds for obesity: "A more appropriate cut-point for obesity with BMI is 24 for females and 28 for males."

A BMI of 24 is currently classed as a "normal" weight.

I don't know about that. According to BMI im
    almost overweight, which is absurd.

Also according to the same indexes Australia is the second fattest developed nation next to the US, and I just don't see it.

I don't know if this is just the place where I live, but yeah, Americans are indeed fat

That's not surprising. The american diet consists of burgers, fries, lots of cheese, chips, processed food, fast food, very little veggies and fruits, and tons and tons of soda = obesity. To make it worse, the health care system believes the answer to all this is drugs and surgery without ever thinking that the food we eat is the problem. It's time to go naturopathic.

The usual excuse for poor eating habits is along the lines of "I don't have time to cook and exercise" or rather "I don't feel like cooking or exercising". It doesn't help that processed foods are cheaper at the grocery store, so most people would rather buy what's cheaper and skip the fruits and veggies. Add to that, many can't seem to grip the concept of watching your portions. We live in an age of everything being super sized and trying to excuse laziness.

Back in the day (high school) I was told I was "heavy, bordering on obese" whilst in the middle of wrestling season, able to deadlift 500lbs, squat 450, bench 270, and see abs down to my d--k. At 5' 9" 180lbs. Height/weight charts are worse than worthless IMO.

Obviously you were only overweight according to the BMI...BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass or much else. But 28 as the threshold for normal is about right...because you get to 32 and you see how fat folks really are. Obesity is pretty high in this country...but the eye test does more than an average BMI.

It is a general indicator of health, but out of every sample population, you're an outlier, just like there are people who are so thin that their BMI is 17 because of their eating disorder.

Yeah, BMI is a terrible parameter for measuring obesity. All it does say is that you should have a certain weight at a certain height. And we all know that the body of 2 people of the same height can be very different. It does not take body width or muscles in account at all.

I don't need a study to tell me Americans are fat, all I need to do is look around at work. I see old fat white women all day long.

I completely agree. I had a nurse look at a char on the wall and tell me I am morbidly obese. I wanted to slap her.

Its pretty obvious that fattness is the worst problem affecting Americans' health and yet smokers and tobacco companies are the only ones everyone feels free to demonize. Fast food and lazy people are no better IMO, but tell a fatty they have to eat their nasty greasy fastfood in a designated area away from people who like healthy food and see what happens. Why can't we put a surgeon general warning on cartons of fries, or tell fastfood companies they can't market on TV to children but the same is ok for tobacco? Why do schools think its ok to have a fatta$$ teach health class to highschool students? Because they can ramble about the evils of smoking? Until we can answer for this double standard and recognize vice for what it is, fattness will get a social pass.

    /end rant.

BMI is garbage as it doesnt take into account people that actually workout. Because of that it's awful that life and health insurance companies are allowed to use it for rating purposes.
