Default Philippine warship in standoff with China vessels

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines said its largest warship was engaged in a tense standoff with Chinese surveillance vessels Wednesday at a disputed South China Sea shoal, after the ship attempted to arrest Chinese fishermen but was blocked by the surveillance craft.
Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario summoned Chinese Ambassador Ma Keqing to resolve the dangerous impasse diplomatically. Del Rosario's office said in a statement that the Scarborough Shoal "is an integral part of Philippine territory" and Filipino authorities would assert sovereignty over the offshore area.

It was inevitable that the two would go at it again. Hopfully, this doesn't escalate any further.

Escalate....dunno....depends if the PLA Navy nationalist warhawks get their way. But it DEFINITELY happen AGAIN and AGAIN. A few months ago Chinese BBS went on full flame mode after someone posted pictures of dozens of oil platforms in the disputed waters and thousands of trolls were demanding war and no one thought to mention that these were in disputed waters but framed it as that Chinese sovereign territory was being invaded by other countries and the CCP was too pussy to do anything about it.

See most of these warhawks both Civilians and in their Armed Forces, have never really experienced a full on warfare. They see their ships and think they will dominate the South China sea, forgetting that there is a human factor should this go into an all out war. Will the Philippine Navy get wiped off the South China Sea, probably faster than they can get a tan from the sun. However, there are plenty of ways to skin a cat.

Trolls will be trolls. You know how the china-bots are. I dunno if I would read too much official CCP underwriting into that.

I would be more afraid, if China stops trolling. Then it means they are planning something. The more they troll the more the region builds up, by the time they would attack, the region would have weaponry that would give them a bloody nose, as suppose to beaing friendly and letting the other drop their guard.

The Philippine navy didn't waste any time in deploying the ex-Hamilton in contested waters.

Interesting read! one thing that one can take from the articles its not just about games but getting the two countries to start building better trust among its service men and also getting used to working on each other bases for joint operations, first start with a friendly visit showing one side around a base then playing some sports games. then few months later start hold more exchanges and joint training. This could perhaps be the start a partnership with Vietnam and the Philippines to form a front to counter China.

you know, no matter how funny you are trying to paint the grim fact about the state of Philippine Armed Forces, i still find it very ironic, and i feel for you and them

maybe this is not the right thread to ask, but how goes to procurement plans for the Armed forces?

a pair of subs or more will be most effective to hedge against the Chinese, has it been planned/discussed by the Armed Forces staffs?
i also caught news about PAF dropping the idea of acquiring a squadron of used F-16 as they will have problems in maintaining and training for the birds

and true, only idiots would want China to go to war now, why go to war if you make big bucks just by letting the opponent bleed themselves dry, going to war would just provide the opportunity for a knockout punch to settle it once and for all

they think China can get away with SCS and stomping a country or two, let's just not hope things escalate and give these idiots what they wish for

sadly i don't share the same optimism

as a war is less likely to happen than a limited conflict (which itself is pretty low possibility given the economic cooperation between China and the ASEAN nations), it is even less likely that the fellow ASEAN countries will put up anything more than diplomatic protest towards China

urging to resolve conflict with peaceful means, yadda yadda

but it will set a new precedent for China

at the end of the day, the one with more boats and bigger patrol boats wins the day, as no one wants to go to war, China wins

The submarines has been requested by AFP generals to the President but they were thinking the same lines as Thailand (getting 2nd-hands) but are weary of what happened to Singapore's experience wherein the expenses for the refurbishment and "tropicalization" of the subs almost equaled to buying a new sub and that it took so long that it would have been better to just brand-new and wait for a 1 sub every 12-15 months. Personally, I hope they think of asking Japan for their 15-20 yr old Harushio subs and ask for at least 1 trainer sub.

As for the F-16, the are merely "re-thinking" it and not entirely dropping it. Someone was mis-informed that the re-furbished F-16s will not last at least 15 years after undergoing SLEP. My personal hunch is they will decrease it from 24 to just 12 and mix it with possibly brand-new 12 Korean FA-50s.
