    Default National Guard Tanks 1975-1989

Served in A Co. 1/102 Armor, 50AD NJARNG from 1987-1993. Started on M48a5 and moved to M60a3 before I left service. Was wondering what tanks were used by NJARNG before the M48a5. Also wondering what tanks were used by other ARNG units from 1975 on and what the transition dates were between types. I know some units had slick m60, some m60a1, m48a5 etc.

    I'm interested in:
    26th ID (MAARNG)
    28th ID (PAARNG)
    38th ID (INARNG)

The 86th AR BDE (armor brigade for the 42nd ID) from Vermont had M-60's before we transitioned to M1A1's. Now since 2009 they're all cavalry riding around in humvee's and M113's.

Before the M48A5's the standard gun tanks had the 90mm tube. The Likely candidates were the M48A1/A2/A3 prior to the upgun program. NYARNG had M60A3's in 1990 in both 1/210th AR and 1/101 CAV. I first remember seeing M1IP's in the NY units around 1996, will ask around some of my older tanker bros.

When was the M48A5 finally retired from the Guard totally? I know some units still had M1 Garands and M3 Grease guns here in Mississippi as late as the 1980s as the primary small arms, but when did the old M48 rattle off into the happy hunting ground?

I know the TN National Guard 278th ACR had M48A5's from the late 70's early 80's until sometime in the mid 80's. The paint jobs varied tremendously, with at least one being solid green while most were some loose variation of the standard camo pattern at the time. I'm thinking the M88A1 recovery vehicle was a solid green as well. At some point in the mid to late 80's, they switched to M60A3's. I'm sorry I don't remember the exact dates. I had several friends in that unit as we were all in ROTC together. The M3 grease guns were standard issue throughout the whole time period for the tankers. The mechanics and 19D's had M16A1's. I remember during the Gulf War seeing active duty armored units armed with the M3 as well so these weapons weren't just confined to the NG.

We have a US member here that he was an old tanker. Can't remember his name right now but he had for an avatar a black guy in a US civil war uniform. He would have been a great help for this interesting thread

I served in the 2nd and 3rd Squadrons of the 107th ACR, Ohio Army National Guard. When I joined in 1976 we were supposed to have M551 Sheridan's. But I never saw them. When I got back from training in 1977 we had M60A1's. Within a year or two we were issued M48A5's. We held onto the M48A5's until we transitioned to the M1 in 1989-90. We never upgraded our M1's during time with the Regiment. I ended my service in 1996.
