Default Attempt to steal INS Chakra - Russian secrets

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/i...w/12630176.cms

Exactly a week after the 8,140-tonne nuclear-powered attack submarine INS Chakra was inducted into the Indian Navy on a 10-year lease from Russia, a brazen attempt was made to steal key documents pertaining to the submarine from a star hotel here on Wednesday.
The attempt to steal the secret documents was made in Novotel Hotel room (No. 534) of a high- ranked Russian officer T Alexander when he was away. Alexander, who is a vice admiral rank officer, was shocked to see his room lock broken when he returned around 2.30 pm.

Investigation is on with the help of CCTV footage. Indian "IB" should take up seriously.

Haha, same here. I thought it was the Russians themselves trying to inconspicuously smuggle the sub back home. Now that would've opened up a whole new chapter in Indo-Russian relations

On topic, I guess fact really is equally or more amazing than the stuff of spy novels. I don't know about the particular safety measures involved, but keeping state secrets in a safety locker of a hotel room does sound kind of careless to me...

That was a rather brazen attempt, and rather careless both on the part of Indians and Russians, or maybe its just the media sensationalizing the event. We may never know.

This man knew exactly in which Hotel, in which room, the vice admiral was staying. More over he gained access to the room. Points to a "cell" at work.

The notion that a sophisticated person would leave key secret military documents in a hotel room is more than far fetched.

Even if it was a high-end hotel, it is still a hotel, not some personal apartment building of an intelligence agency or some other institution.

india's external intelligence agency is called RAW ie research and analysis wing & india's internal agency is called IB ie intelligence bureau. They both are largely very toothless organizations.
