The action started when Alpha 1/9 was clearing the road out of Cam Lo, they thought they were being hit by snipers, went to sweep for snipers and ran into 2 battalions of NVA reinforced with heavy Artillery. Did not go well for Alpha 1/9. Rest of 1/9 reacted and so did 2/9 and 3/9. End of the day, 1/9 was pulled from the field, maybe this is where reditalianwolf is saying it is a victory for the NVA. 1/9 was replaced with 1/3.
One of my team mates, was originally in CAG, he was in a ville that was over run. But the time react got to them he and 2 other Marines was still alive and they had about 130 dead VC Reg inside of the wire. Our kill ratio was around 15 - 16 to one. They paid dearly for each on of us. There leadership was terrible.
IIRC, I may be off. It is from memory.
