Default Gingrich’s Secret Service detail likely costing taxpayers tens of thousands dollars

edit: i dont know why the dailer caller is blocked..

Gingrich reportedly requested Secret Service protection in February and was granted a detail in early March. In April 2008, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan told the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee that it was then costing the agency roughly $38,000 a day to service each candidate receiving protection, which was then just Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Even if it doesnt cost 38,000/day but more like 10,000/day that would mean he has used 450,000 dollars of tax payer money for his own protection.

Is he trying to beat the GSA in wasteful spending?

Yes but where do you draw the line? What if the leader of the socialist party or the green party wanted a secret service detail. The two you pointed out were frontrunners, gingrich isnt.

There's a law that governs which candidates get Secret Service protection. The two parties that you mentioned, don't get it and won't get it unless they are considered viable candidates deserving of the detail.

Indeed, and I believe Gingrich has met the legal threshold.

The law can also be overridden in the case of specific threats to a candidate.

Any mention of the cost of Howard Dean's protection detail in '04?

You know, one thing we shouldnt skimp on, or begrudge is this protection detail.

Do you really want to see another RFK Murder? or Wallace Shooting? there are lunatics out there, left and right who hate candidates.

the same who whine about this will moan about Giffords shooter getting away with it.

    This.
Indeed, if one were the paranoid type, one might point out that RFK, Wallace and Giffords are (D) while Gingrich is (R). One might suppose that the OP's level of concerned about human life is dependent on partisan alignment. That it's money well spent to protect Democrats, but a waste to protect Republicans.

But I'm sure that's not what justin84 means. Right, dude?

How did this turn partisan? I found the story on drudgereport.

I'm okay with the nominees receiving a protection detail, did i ever say anywhere that mitt romney doesnt deserve protection, or that i was for hillary and barack having protection? No.
Do i think ron paul and newt deserve protection? Or how about darcy richardson...

So Mu-Meson is now advocating secret service details for congress men and women also? What about my local mayor of 30k people.

Jesus Mu, could you be a little more mental?

Just because no one is actually taking Newt seriously as a viable candidate anymore doesn't mean he isn't covered under the law.

The sovereignty and stability of the country is being protected as much as the candidates.
