And here we go
Do they also represent the African-American and Native Americans?

(RIP, Levon)
Memorial Day was originally Decoration Day and it was celebrated by the South as well as the North.
States fought as individual entities during the Civil War in a meaningful way, the regiments all carried the names and honor of their respective states. To think that a particular state would decide to honor their dead on any day they chose is not a foreign concept...It's history, full of prejudice and honor, hatred and heroism. F*ck revisionism. Revisionist PC bullsh*t isn't real.
Let me just list all the names that I know for it.
The War Between the States
The War of Secession
The War for Southern Independence
The War of Northern Aggression
The Second American Revolution
And I feel like I'm forgetting one.....but yeah, take your pick of those. Most commonly though it is referred to as The War Between the States.
EDIT: Here's the wiki article on it. It's got Union names for it too, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_...ican_Civil_War
Ah, The War of Secession even rings a bell. Did not know you guys had so many names for it. Thank you.
Having spent four and a half years in Virginia...Lee-Jackson day is on MLK day, however in VA they celebrate MLK day the next week.
Keep it classy GA...good thing I didn't need any essential services that day.
Having ancestors which fought on both sides, I have no problems with Confederate Memorial Day. Rather appropriate in fact.
It's just the Civil War for most people...but Southern Insurrection works.
