Am I a liberal if I think this guy serious got the **** end of the stick?
Sure he made a remarkably stupid comment on his FB-page.
Still, he gave 10 God damn years. That is a LOT.
Seems like its just to easy to give him the boot.
I'm a civilian, so by all means, flame me for all you got, you're most likely right. I just find it a bit too harsh.
Once again; 10 effin years.
And once again, the military is not the civilian world. This guy was an NCO with 10 years of experience under his belt. He knew exactly what could happen, and chose to do his own thing. I've got zero to no sympathy for him, or any other idiot that decides they're special and don't have to follow the rules.
Look at it this way: he took an oath. An oath at its best is a time-honored way of showing that your word is the most important thing. If you break an oath, your word has no meaning or value. Moreover, if he had done this in the military of many countries in the world, he might have incurred much steeper penalties. Specifically, we have UCMJ. Other countries have firing squads. Feel me?
I guess I cant argue against what you're saying.
DD, it is like this, when the command comes out, ONLINE.... and assault a enemy position, that is dug in. That is something you would not do, That is what Marines do. They don't discuss it, complain, etc, they get online and assault, some won't make it. If he wanted a kinder gentler career where he can bloviate all he wants when he is not working he should have gone to work for Burger King.
Your not a liberal, you just don't know. Grunts live a life that few people would put up with. Socks rotting off of their feet, unclean drinking water, little food, little rest, seeing their buds get killed or wounded wondering if they are next, all the while obeying orders and standing with each other. It comes with the job, he made his choice.
Maybe we should ask these Marines, about him not obeying orders;
Mutters Ridge '66. I was there in '69.
Think of it like driving a car.
You can drive your car perfectly for 45 years: never cut anyone off, never honk your horn, never cause accidents .. etc
Until one day you have a beer too many and you kill a family in their car because you ran a red light.
Just because you were able to drive for so long without killing anyone does not mean you should not be punished.
In the case of this ex-Marine, he drove fine for ~10 years but then he hit a pedestrian. When reprimanded he ignored the reprimands and continued to hit pedestrians. Ergo, he was punished.
Yeah I know, I've been lurking here long enough to actually get to know what some of you been through.
I'm going to retract myself from this thread before anyone gets the idea I'm actually defending this Marine. Because I'm not. I kinda juste feel bafflement over the actual amount of time he spent, serving his country, to have it all ended like this.
And that picture is close to madness. I've seen it before, it's still just as griping.
I like to think 66' was a long time ago. But it's really not.
DD, he made his choice, he was not forced to do it. It was his decision to throw away ten years. The Corps also invested 10 years in him. This is something they did not do lightly. By the decision that he made, he chose not to serve his country and to throw aside 10 years that he spent in the Corps. I bet, he will regret the game that he played. Civilians can have the luxury of playing games, Marines don't.
I don't think you need to have spend time in a warzone, to know speaking against your boss and company in public is not without risk.
If you worked at Apple, you wouldn't call Tim Cook a liar, suggest you might leak the new iphone on your facebook and expect your ten year senority to save your job either.
This really can't be that hard of a concept to grasp: in the same way you pay for whatever a bullet you fire from a gun hits, you bear the responsibility and consequences of whatever words come out of your suckhole when you speak. Whether you're a politician, a CEO or a member of the Armed Services.
