Bringing the Israeli elections forward to September 4th of this year not only won't avert an Iran strike, but rather, in some ways may in fact advance the fight against Tehran's nuclear program. Those who think that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is heading to these elections due to weakness are wrong. The PM has a stable coalition, yet its makeup won't allow it to cope with the challenges it would have faced in the near future.

In a dramatic move, the Likud and Kadima parties agreed on a unity government early Tuesday, averting the prospect of early elections.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kadima Chairman Shaul Mofaz finalized the surprising unity agreement hours before the Knesset was expected to approve its own dissolution and set September 4th as the date of the next elections.

    No one saw this coming...

IMHO anyone who has been moaning about early elections should pretty much shut up on this matter. Mofaz and Bibi just saved us almost half a billion Shekels and weeks upon weeks of non-stop BS (no wonder the Israeli media is pissed off at this ).

Perhaps Mofaz understands that a de facto national unity government is in order as well as the fact that he doesn't have a chance of becoming PM in the near future.

Not to mention that it seriously marginalizes Shas if Lieberman wants it to.

By inserting Shaul Mofaz and Kadima into the government, Prime Minister Netanyahu may be trying to tighten ranks ahead of a possible war that might be looming on the horizon, a war against Iran.

What about the notion that Mofaz is not known as a hawk, and that he's Iranian born? I think there's more here than is being discussed. Not necessarily hidden, but I think the press and analysts have only grabbed the low-hanging fruit of this moves' significance. The hell with Iran, let's screw Shas and United Torah.

During his term in previous government Mofaz said that Israel will spare the lives of ordinary Iranians.

TIME Magazine devotes lead story to prime minister; cover subheading says 'He's concurred Israel, but will Netanyahu now make peace – or war?'
