Default 2 of first female U.S. Navy submariners investigated for fraud.

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/01/us/fem...iref=obnetwork

"Two of the first women to be chosen by the U.S. Navy to serve on submarines have had their duties reassigned and are being investigated for fraud, according to U.S. Navy officials."

Inauspicious begginings if the charges are found to be credible.

Did they turn out not to be women after all?

I certainly hope it's not simply a system that still has issues with women trying to find a way to get rid of them. I really doubt it but it does cross my mind. All it takes is one old-school guy to stir womething up and they have to do a full investigation. Otherwise they could be accused of treating them differently because they are women. Pure speculation and I hope it turns out to be nothing or, if they're guilty, they're punished acccordingly.

Not good, not good at all. The US Navy's officer corps has been taking a beating the past few years with officers being relieved of command, arrested, and investigated for all sorts of violations of the law, or flat out piss poor leadership ability.

    Did you read the article?

Claiming leases cost more than actually cost and excessive expenses-Seems like common thieves. If I claimed 50 miles more on my travel vouucher than drove I would expect to be nailed for it. Being a woman doesnt get you a pass on criminality

I'd be interested to hear about the total number of military personnel being investigated for expenses fraud. Really hope this story doesn't set a negative tone for female submariners. I'm sure it won't - bit early to draw any conclusions anyway.

I think they're making a mountain out of a molehole thus far. They submitted for reimbursement on something they interpreted as being eligible, that's what the article is stating. I think they are probably receiving extra scrutiny based of who they are. If they did do it intentionally which I would doubt, they are the dumbest people on the face of the earth because the opportunity they have received is one beyond comprehension; and not just because they are women. I would have given my left nut to have been in a position to go to nuclear powered school and then officer submariner school.

Sounds like it might not be a big deal, but couldn't help thinking of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Flynn

You dont **** with DFAS, they will hound you if you over claimed and if they found you faked something your hosed. I knew a joe who tried to pass off a lease claiming a NYC address when he lived in Lockport NY, a difference of 2000 dollars a month in BAQ. he did not fare well when it was all done.

Fraud is fraud. It doesn't care what gender you are.

Quite right. This alleged case has the unfourtanate timing of happening when the Navy was testing the viability of women on subs. This, whether true or not, will distract from the business at hand.

Expense padding is one of the easiest frauds to get away with ... which is why so many people do it.

It seems like a small thing, but it really adds up. And it needs to be punished harshly because it's hard to detect.

The best way to discourage crime is either certainty or severity of punishment. Expense fraud is hard to detect so the criminal can be fairly confident they'll get away with it. So it has to be punished severely to discourage it.

Especially as govt controls an ever larger portion of the economy, the US runs the risk of govt employees chiseling the taxpayer at every level. Corrupt countries are notorious for every mailman and DMV clerk padding expenses and cheating the taxpayer. It really does add up.

Corruption in America appears to be on the rise. There actually is some decent data on this. More diverse countries tend to be more corrupt. As America has become more diverse we need to clamp down hard on corruption.

Diversity tends to cause corruption due to distrust between ethnic groups. Each group becomes convinced the other groups are corrupt and stealing, so they don't want to be played for a sucker and start stealing themselves. It's a vicious cycle. The least corrupt countries tend to be the most ethnically, culturally homogenous -- like Japan and Norway. Those countries have less govt fraud, less welfare fraud, less crime in general.

America has chosen to be very diverse, which means we need to be extra harsh on govt corruption. We already are significantly more corrupt than the least corrupt nations and the trend in recent decades has been increasing corruption.

Corruption can quickly spiral out of control in a society like today's America.

The headline just goes to show what a hot potato women in certain military assignments can be for some parts of the American public.
I mean, all I can read there is that two broads tried to rip off Uncle Sam. Gender and even the assignment itself played no role whatsoever in that.
