I am also very interested to see how Van Marrwijk will play Germany.
I have a sneaking suspicion, based on his conservative nature, that he will stick to the same starting eleven. I hope not.

I would love to see Huntelaar as the deep striker. The problem is he is a true deep striker so relies on effective wing play. With Robben you won;t get that on right because he always cuts inside to go away from his weaker foot as well as taking too many individual runs.
I would put Kuyt on the right wing because he will do what is asked of him. The only defecit is less creativity and technical ability there.
Affelay on the left is fine. Van Persie as a right winger could also possibly work...

The problem is more often than not the midfield and why the build-up is too slow.
Van Marwijk needs to bench Van Bommel- son in law or not. I can't believe he took out De Jong instead of Van Bommel when he subbed in Van der Vaart against Denmark.
Van Bommel made less effective passes and already had a yellow. Being Van Marwijk's son-in-law goes a long way.

In my opinion it would be better to just have De Jong as the so called vaccuum cleaner and Sneijder and Van der Vaart as the other two midfielders.
When De Jong and Van Bommel started hanging back against the Danes is when they stopped being as effective. Sneijder would have to run more and rely on longer passes and through balls- something he can do, but it just slows down the build up too much.
They have to keep compact against the Germans and maintain the lines- I just think a more forward-oriented midfield would be the better bet- that is where Germany disrupted them so effectively in the last friendly.

Van Der Wiel was poor in defence, against Denmark pretty horrible. Heitinga isn't very good but they don't really have anyone and Mathijsen we shall see how fit he is.
The Netherlands just doesn't produce good defensive players very often. Luckily the inexperienced Jetro Willems was pretty good, confident enough and fast enough to catch those who pass him.

I am worried. There is a lot at stake.
There are some fun historical facts and bs like that but what worries me most is the Netherlands trend to suck in tournaments after they have been in a final. (76, 80, 90)
Then again, loss in a friendly to Bulgaria at home and then the opening game worked for them in 1988.
Furthermore, Germany lost its second group game in the last two tournaments.

The simple fact of the matter is, if you can't score then you don't belong there.

    ---

Even a neutral observer could possibly agree with me that it would be best if the Netherlands beat Germany and Portugal beats Denmark because then everyone is on 3 points and the last group game will be even more explosive!

No. I am perfectly fine with an anti-climatic 3rd match after Germany already has 6 points.

Seriously though, I am really curious which German and which Dutch squad will show up tonight. Neither has looked too sharp thus far and neither wants to stumble tonight. Germany can live with a draw, Holland needs a win, even if they theoretically can still advance if they get a draw and beat the Portugeuse later... provided the Germans beat the Danes. I think.

I'm not sure my blood pressure could take that

Article in this morning's Volkskrant about the newfound Dutch love for Germany. I wouldn't call it love, rather 'appreciation', which is just as likely to go out of the window should Germany win. The Dutch relation with Germany is complicated, and not something most Germans seem to grasp too much. I guess winning in football is a way of sticking it to Fritz, and something most of us agree is a good thing, it's just that it doesn't happen too much, which only serves to fan the flames of our unilateral rivalry

Fritz is gonna stomp your ass once again this evening. And i'll be burning Dutch weed as an offering to the football gods for their great justice...

Germany 2-1 is my prediction. I said the Dutch would choke coming into this tournament and I stand by that.

You can spot one of your tourists in Germany at a glance - and you don't even have to look for the ugly license plates - you notice it because 99% are driving a camper van and block the Autobahn.

Compensation for Germans thinking they own our beaches. Digging a hole and pissing Heinz in the sand next to it does not suddenly make it real estate

sort of what I'm expecting as well, perhaps 1-1, Denmark to score first, sit back and then let in a careless goal.

^^Don't want to see anyone get banned. There's been a warning for folks to avoid these political/nationalistic bickering.

yea, but that will be bad for the dutch; it will shatter any prospect of qualifying from the group with just three points. in other words, NL will have to get a result vs Germany...it will make for an exciting game though.

Clearly I want Denmark to go through, miracle or not, and I can't see us even snatching a draw against germany, so Portugal is going to be a decisive game for us, so I'm hoping for a repeat of the qualifiers where we beat portugal last time around, and could have had a far greater scoreline if not for a bit more efficiency in the box and ronaldo falling over to secure a free kick and goal, but i suspect both sides willll be rather careful going forward, as a loss for either, especially portugal, is going to be tough to swallow given our next games. So, a draw, although would love to see Denmark win, obviously.
