Default America's Next Bomber: Unmanned, Unlimited Range, Aimed At China

The U.S. military is developing its next generation bomber with Chinese anti-access strategy — the ability to stop any enemy force from coming to fight with things like carrier killer missiles — in mind. The new bomber will replace older platforms like the 1950's B-52, the 1970's B-1, and 1990's B-2 stealth bomber. The new bomber will sport some unique qualities. It will have an option to be unmanned, will act similar to a UAV, have better stealth capabilities, will be connected to U.S. intelligence networks to create a 'smart' battlefield environment, and have near unlimited range thanks to in-air refueling.

A new bomber already? Really? Because B-1's, B-2's, and Buff's can't get the job done or is this just another jobs program for aircraft makers?

    The MIC is a menace.

Meanwhile the A10 will still be running CAS missions after 50 years in service. I think the USAF should be disbanded, bring back the Army Air Corps.

By this logic, doesn't every US combat aircraft have unlimited range?

It should be possible to make a some kind of high altitude stealthy unmanned solar powered heavy bomber, with theoric unlimited range and nearly permanently in the air.

But the B-52 are scheduled to stay in service until at least 2025, up to 2040 if put to the H standard, the B-1 might be phased out before them.

If they start today, do you know how long it would take until they actually hit the ramp? Also, do you think B-52s and B-1s have infinite lifetimes?

Not to mention, a solar powered bomber is almost as possible as one powered by rainbows and unicorns.

Tell me King Donkey Dick - What CAS platform is due to go into production for our forces in the future? None have been announced here in any threads so please, by God, enlighten us.

Buff is scheduled to keep flying until 2040, haven't heard about the status of the B-1 so why don't you fill us in since you seem to have all the answers.
