Default Anyone here with Crohn's Disease?

I've been recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and was wondering if anyone here had it or knows anyone who did. I planned on joining the Army as a medic was already talking with a recruiter when I was admitted into the hospital. I still plan on becoming a Paramedic/Firefighter but wanted to know if anyone could give me any advice on how you or someone you know deals with Crohn's. Any advice or information would be great!

I had a cousin. He smoked. A lot. He also had a poor diet. Don't do that. As I understand, Crohn's is manageable but it requires controlled circumstances and diet. Two things a life in the Army will step all over. While your aspiration is very admirable I think something like first responder would better serve you while ding something very meaningful and fulfilling.

I know one person who has it
A Specific carbohydrate diet helped a lot (google it)
Another diet (sorry only in French : methode Seignalet) can help too : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrition_Seignalet
I know 2 other persons who used this last diet for other inflammatory diseases and it worked well (better than the drugs)
It seems a bit complicated and it's an habit to take but i can assure your first hand that it works (or at least worked for these 2 people)

You are more likely to get this disease if you:

    • Have a family history of Crohn's disease
    • Are Jewish

    • Smoke
    What? How is that possible?

Thanks for your input, but I had high aspirations prior to this and still hold up to a few of these since being diagnosed and I think that if I don't at least attempt to reach these goals(I hope to eventually become an EMS District Chief or Flight Paramedic) then I will feel like I have let myself down

I think we missed each other in the text...
By all means pursue a career as an EMS (I misused the term first responder, my apologies).

as a intern into becoming a naturopathic doctor, diet should be consisting of an enteral diet which is comsuming free amino acids and peptide based, whole proteins, and low in fats to have excellent outcome in CD. Eliminating food interolances like dairy, wheat, eggs and corn can be helpful.

Consuming a vitamin and mineral supplement would be helpful in correcting nutritional deficiencies, but you may not feel well which could happen. Omega 3 fatty acid from fish oil is something I'd prescribe as well as probiotics to help the flora that lives in the gut to help enhance metabolic activity and function.

I had Ulcerative Colitis - which is basically Crohn's Diseases cousin. It's the same but only effects the large intestine instead of the whole GI tract like Crohn's.

I was on a whole bunch of meds - mainly steriods (Predisone) and Immunosuppresive drugs, but they didn't work / put it into remission (have it but no symptoms) so I ended up getting my large intestine removed - best decision I ever made, especially after the years I put up with it

Guy I know had his teeth seriously compromised because of Crohn's, I think he neglected himself though. He's got several tooth implants now and claims to feel a lot better now that they were removed. Not sure how rare that complication is or if it mostly just happens when it goes untreated.

I have it and the first tip is to ignore most clowns that say that they have a solution based on humbug. Diet have a roll but as Crohn can show is ugly head after 20 years of calm itīs pretty hard to know what works and whatīs not. You will meet a lot of more people in real life that think that they have the solution but just ignore most of those who arenīt real doctors specialized on Crohn.

Most people can live a pretty normal life with Crohns but I would think more than ones about jobs that makes it hard (timewise) to go when I have to.

I worked with a man for 8 years who had Crohns but it didn't seem to slow him down. This was industrial maintenance work with long hours, lots of climbing and physical exertion. I never discussed it with him but he did pay close attention to his weight, diet and medication so I guess that's the key to living with it. He's retired now, close to 70 yrs and still active.

Agree, look at the SCD by Elaine Gottschall.
