(CNN) - Proud American citizen Michele Bachmann now has another country to call home: Switzerland.
The Minnesota congresswoman and former GOP presidential candidate was granted dual citizenship with the European country, her spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday night.
"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."

She's yours, Switzerland.
A few things: I believe I have met several American Jews whose grandparents emigrated from Germany. I believe they are eligible to go back under right of return. Unsurprisingly, none wish to do so.
If they had such a thing as right of return in Sweden or Croatia, I don't think I could do it. I'm an American and my ancestors left such places for a reason. So, what's her excuse? She ran for president at one point and is somehow going to even come anywhere near being a citizen elsewhere? I don't think that's right at all. I suspected she was batshit crazy, but this is downright hypocritical. Let's see who comes in here to justify this. Maybe the Swiss won't let her in when they discover "pray the gay away."
Apparently her kids want to become Swiss citizens and in order for that to happen she had to become one as well. But yeah, that'd be extremely weird to hold high political office as a dual citizen. I don't think it's illegal though.
It probably is legal but I could care less - there are plenty of upstanding politicians who might have, say, Israeli passports and what not. What bothers me is that she always passed herself off as such a real Yankee Doodle Dandy. She always went for the folksy talk and has a lot of pinecone hillbillies in her district to mollify. Now this.
As I understand it, Swiss citizenship is VERY difficult to come by....especially now that a new emigrant(with no familial ties to Switzerland) requires 10 years minimum residency I believe to gain Swiss citizenship.
Switzerland has proven to be a rock of stability and relative consistency for hundreds of years, but especially for the last 100+.
If I had the chance, or knew of anyone who had the chance, to gain Swiss citizenship quite quickly and easily I'd be crazy not to do it....or crazy not to advise folks to strongly consider it.
The world is going through a pretty wild geopolitical and economic flux at the moment.....while there's a decent chance the transition away from the US Dollar and towards something else...as well as the shift away from a unipolar to a multipolar world will transition without major catastrophe.....why not hedge your bets in case things get less than pretty?
When you get right down to it....what's more important a country or a family?
Maybe it depends on the circumstances......historically there's been periods where it's been difficult to impossible for people to do what they want when they want, when it comes to international bounderies.
Being able to provide your children and descendants with OPTIONS is what parents are supposed to do.
She may be b@tsh!t crazy, but it sounds like she may be doing something smart and wise for her children.
Think of it as a very valuable insurance policy and 2nd VIP card.
Yeah, I get that. She has always been smarter than what the MSM gives her credit for. From an individual's point of view, sure, go where the opportunities are. It's your life. She was supposed to be Team America, though, as far as her political persona is concerned. She's just a phony hypocrite.
Plan "B" is underway.
Fixed that for you:
Languages of Switzerland
As a non-resident Swiss citizen, does she now have to pay taxes in Switzerland? Not sure on Swiss tax laws, however citizens of most countries are usually required to at least report their foreign-earned income and are given credit to a certain point on taxes paid abroad.
Dual citizenship isnt just a toy to play with.
