^You know, it's not enough if somebody invented fire. It needs also a person who's bright enough to use it to burn things... just saying![]()
Not to be a downer, but Mesopotamia (Iraq) gave us civilization (ironic, I know, but still). Also, many of the advances made today are possible because of the inventions of complex mathematics (Algebra, which is Arabic) and modern medicine (which also originated in the middle east).
Anyways... I thank Europe for culture, that you cannot deny.
and, how can we forget Europe's often culturally ignored state, Russia:
^You know, it's not enough if somebody invented fire. It needs also a person who's bright enough to use it to burn things... just saying![]()
Oh, they used Mathematics, advanced thought, and Medicine quite a lot in the Middle East, until the crusades started. Then the Europeans came and burned down the Great Libraries of many Middle Eastern cities, executed scholars and priests, raised cities to the ground, and then took all their captured bounty and knowledge back to Europe with them. People often forget that while Europe was mostly struggling through the dark ages, the Middle East was the cultural and scientific capital of the world. That all changed with the Crusades, and the balance of power shifted over to Europe.
With that being said, it's not like they lacked ingenuity or know how. They were just decimated by centuries of warfare, and never completely recovered, while Europe ended up a lot better off than beforehand.
Europe struggling through the Dark Ages? If you say so, what do I know. And Crusades curbing the technical advancement in Middle East, once again, if you say so. You also seem to forget China, quite a deal of culture and science over there as well.
Typical, blame it on us Euros, nobody likes us but everybody wants to be like us![]()
But of course, the Crusaders destroyed everything...
Fighting took place in a very limited area. Compared to the expansion of the islamic world of that time, it was a series of regional conflicts. And after the Crusades islam expanded even further.
And europeans went on to decimate themselves for centuries afterwards as well.
I'm not putting blame on Europe, I'm just emphasizing the regional power shifts that we've seen throughout history. Power shifts have always happened from one area of the world to another, it's just the way things go. It did, in effect, curb the technical advancement, but I concede, that yes, I probably am over-exaggerating a bit, but it still had an effect on Arab technological advancement. I didn't mention China, because at this time, Europe had very limited contact with China only through the silk roads. Very few Europeans had ever even seen China at this time, and so in that sense, they were an Eastern power, not what the Europeans at the time would consider a world power, because their world was made up of Europe, the Holy Land, and some parts of Africa.
Not everything, but they did plunder and burn the Libraries of Constantinople, which was the largest resource for knowledge and history in the world at that point. Centuries of Knowledge were lost when the Library was destroyed. And while the fighting took place in a limited area, most of the highly developed Arab world was mostly confined to the area in which the fighting took place. And Islam itself spread, but like the Europeans, this did not stop the Arabs from fighting each other for centuries.
Never said there was a problem with it. I probably wouldn't be typing on a computer right now if it didn't happen. What I'm getting at is the SOURCE of the things we take for granted today. I don't care what civilization or race you are, if you contributed to humanity in some way, you should get credit for it.
Look, this all came from pocolocos comment in which he basically said the Arabs might have invented something, but they weren't smart enough to use it, while the Europeans were. This is wrong, as the Europeans ultimately benefited greatly from something the Arabs invented, and they adopted themselves. To benefit from someone, and then not give them deserved credit, is a practice that wishy washy wankers indulge in.
Hmm, aint we forgetting that arab science started to flourish when they got their hands on ancient greek texts?
Also the comment that europeans started their decline is ridiculous, they did it themselves, with radical Islam while Europeans went with secularization.
