Default Roman Empire Helmet Plume Colors

So I've been looking into buying one of those Roman Helmets with the side flaps and plume or "broom head" on the top of it and have noticed that there are various colors: red, white, black, gold and sometimes multicolored. I know that the plumes represent an officer but do specific colors mean anything? Like red=Centurion while white=phalanx or something like that.

Does anyone know? Color me curious.

And I am buying the helmet just for fun. I have some Medieval ones as well.
