Default There "Could Be" 30,000 Drones Over the US in the Next Decade

Judge Napolitano on Use of Drones in US: Congress Is Going to Look the Other Way and Let the Air Force Spy in Our Backyards
The FAA is expected to announce plans to expand the use of domestic drones in American airspace. These would be similar to the unmanned aircraft that the U.S. has been using to target terrorists abroad. In the U.S., the surveillance systems would be used to track terrorists, drug dealers or to find missing children. But critics warn that the use of drones presents a major threat to our personal privacy.

Jonathan Hunt reports that there could be as many as 30,000 drones flying overhead within the next decade.

Sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, but personally, I would not be against drones patrolling our airspace at all. It'd make fugitives easier to catch, it'd be a great deterrent to kidnappers, Border Patrol's job would be much easier, etc.

    What do you guys think?

30k seems to be a bit of an exaggeration. Looks like more jobs will be opening up even with way less drones. I guess if they are looking to thwart cattle thefts Im all for it . I think drones can assist the police but I'm indifferent on the issue.

How do you avoid invading thousands of people's privacy while looking for some nickle and dime dealer who evaded cops?

As long as they have Hellfire kills at the Southern Border on the nightly news I'm all for it.

Drones have been used before over the homeland before with much success, the pace will probably only pick up. So anybody who is shocked is just out of the loop.

You know they will only drop maps when they spot undocumented walkers in the desert.

To be serious.. i wonder how drones will be used, if ever, and evolve in the fight with cartels...?

Well it's just like how any law enforcer could walk in your backyard inside curtilage or peer through a window without a warrant, but the evidence would not admissible. I mean, unless you have glass roofs and are cooking moonshine in your backyard, you probably have nothing to worry about. You can't expect any privacy from the government on public property (i.e. roads or parks) anyway.

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.

Having nothing to worry about and protecting your right to privacy are far from mutually exclusive. And a cop chasing a purp may run through a dozen yards in the name of public good, but a UAV would essentially walk through thousands at a time in dense population centers. The practical result is UAV surveillance of entire neighborhoods.

Still, the idea of an eye in the sky watching my activities and the activities of others unnerves me.

Hey, if you're christian, you can just pretend it's God watching you.

Robots aren't really good at counter insurgency by themselves. You always need organic eyes, ears, and feet on the ground.
