    Default ArmA II : DayZ

PC Zombie Darling Causes Sale Explosion, ArmA Devs Happy to Help

Diablo III may have all the marketing and hype as far as the PC market is concerned, but I'll be damned if anything, Blizzard-developed or not, is going to keep me from playing more DayZ this week.
The zombie survival mod for Bohemia Interactive's military sim ArmA II has come out of nowhere to be one of the most interesting things to happen to PC gaming in 2012. What's most interesting, to me at least, is what it's done to the sales and profile of ArmA II, a very serious game and one that, while successful and prominent within a niche of PC gaming, is hardly what you'd call a mainstream smash.
Yet in the past few weeks more newcomers have been exposed to ArmA II in a short span of time than ever before, all because the game's ruthless approach to realism and survival now includes zombies. To find out how the mod has impacted the game, and how they're handling the overnight renaissance in awareness, I spoke with Bohemia Interactive's Marek Španěl.
"There's no doubt that the thrilling Day Z mod currently drives Arma 2 Combined Operations sales on Steam", he says with a touch of understatement. "Sales have increased almost fivefold from how they were before Day Z's Alpha release!"
"That said, we have always been proud to provide a PC exclusive type of game like Arma 2, with a strong emphasis on modding and the user community."

Anyone else playing this? I just bought the game on Steam, and will be patching/downloading the DayZ mod tonight to check it out.

So it was with a little bit of excitement this week when I sat down with DayZ, a new zombie mod for ArmA II, a hyper-realistic combat simulator that also happens to be one of my favourite PC games of all time.
If you've never played ArmA II, it's an open world shooter where you control a single character who can...do whatever they want. Shoot a rifle, fly a plane, drive a tank, whatever. Only catch is nearly all those things handle and react as they would in the real world. So shooting somebody from 100 yards away, a mundane act in Call of Duty, becomes something to celebrate in ArmA. Especially since damage is also realistic.
So, into this framework comes DayZ, a multiplayer experience which has you taking the role of a zombie apocalypse survivor, stranded on an island that's populated with hundreds of zombies and dozens of other humans. Some of whom are there to help you, while others are there to kill you and take your stuff.

the most difficult part of the game is actually joining a server and getting to play. most people end up with "waiting for server response" on their screen forever and ever

it is great fun once you do manage to get on. It really needs local servers so you can play with your mates without fear of ganking by bandits.
Teamwork is the key, as the number of zombies has just been increased, and they run fast...
server time of day is real time, based on where the server is, and night time is as dark as it is in the great Stalker games... i.e. totally black. and scary.

Is this mod worthy of re-downloading Arma 2?

We should. There was a guy around here offering to host a ArmA 2 server host. Don't know where he went though.

I run with MPN tags from when i was playing ARMAII:PR Usually on the chicago servers as i play late and they run diff timezones on them.

The latest update brought forth more of the undead with them walking between towns & they get attracted by gunfire from farther off, last night i got jumped by one & ended up killing 40 of them before i could break out and hide.

Voice comms are essential in this mod for groups otherwise by the time you typed ZOMBIE they are eating your braaains!

Been playing zombie mods on arma forever, wonder if they finally made attack animations. Also, do I need OA for this?

You need both arma 2 + OA. Though you can use the arma 2 free version.
