Just avoid people for a bit, you'll recover your humanity if you stay out of trouble.
Bandits, how did it happen eh? Someone takes a shot at you and you drop them? Sure you feel bad but it fills your belly for a bit and keeps the thirst down. Now? Now i cant go near anyone without them trying to kill me! Its a damn shame that i found an AKM at the old powerplant, try it survivor boy just try..

-10000 i find trouble! Quite enjoy it really, clocked some flares in the darkness along the coast and went to investigate 4 flares in a box shape round a lighthouse, 2 survivors one with a Enfield and the other with a shotgun laying in some bushes looking the other way only used 4 Makarov rounds, lots of food plus extra canteens matches and finally some binos.
It started off as mistake now its damn fun, i try to stay clear of the coast and let the survivors get going but i got spawned in there due to some bug, i even help i've cleared balotta airfield of bandits twice netting me maps, matches, tents etc.
Well, finally managed to actually connect to a server earlier. found some binocs, m1014 ammo, m203 grenades (didnt take them), and had just found a nice stash of gear and survival equipment in a barn when i lost connection to the server. Sigh.
We stole a helicopter and a Landrover from another group yesterday night. It was ****ing intense.
Just please, no gold. No stores. No safe zones. Sandbox.
Give people tools to build, give them ability to barter, let them construct their own safe zones if they are capable. Otherwise it will risk being perceived as just another RPG/MMO with endless grind. DayZ is cool is because it lacks all the usual trappings that remind you that you are in the game.
So I played when it was night in the server with no moon..... getting swarmed by hordes of 7-8 zombies at once while you only have a makarov, flares, morphine and bandages is fun as hell. I couldnt see **** so I lit a flare and picked it up and ran down the road being chased. Then I got shot by a bandit.
The moon should be back on the 27th, i know Chicago 8 is on an earlier TZ and some of the other servers are too.

^Useful tool until you find a map. Also has locations of water, other points of interest marked.
I'd really like the loot tables to make a bit of sense, though. My buddy and I just looted a military base, entered and exited without a shot fired. We found... tin cans and a can of Pepsi. No weapons or ammo, not even a substantial amount of food. I've had good luck with farmhouses, though. They also need to fix the darkness of the nights. "Dark" is fine, but with the moon and the amount of stars that are always out, I should at least be able to see the ground below me. As it is currently, everything's just solid black unless it's silhouetted against the sky.
Yea; the dark's a lot of fun! I played last night with no visible moon due to cloud cover - the debug menu stated there were only a handful of active zombies around (at one point it said there were none at all), but it was still really intense because of the uncertainty of what you're walking into:
I was looking around one of the unfinished factory buildings in Chernogorsk carrying a flare to navigate the corridors, when I started hearing the ping of incoming rounds from a bandit who saw my flare; one round hit me before I could drop the light and run away. I hid in a dark corner to bandage myself before fumbling around in the pitch black for the way out of the building. Once I got out, I climbed the crane where I thought the shots were fired from, shot this bandit bloke in the back with my trusty Makarov and took his CZ 550 rifle as spoils.
I imagine the proper scavenging aspects of the mod are an utter pain in the arse in the dark though, since it's hard to navigate to ponds etc. to refill water bottles when you can't see the lay of the land ahead.
Can't wait to play this.
Summing up my DayZ experience
- Survived a week and a half. Killing zombies tactically, avoided human beings at all cost. 2 occasions the other person was no more than 10 metres away... maybe they knew I was there, but we had some kind of telepathic desire to avoid contact in semi-darkness.
- hid in church (only found 1) , barns, any enterable buildings. traversed the rogovo, zelengorsk axis to and fro to scavenge for food and ammo. So tense that when stuff dropped from my desk my heart skipped a beat.
- hid in green mountain comms base with at least 4 days of supplies. Biggest mistake. Heard some sounds, not zombie cries or shrieks, but some shuffling noise. snooped around the radio tower to peep. turned round a blind corner. barely saw a silhouette in front of me about arm's length, within seconds, 5 quick rounds drilled into my cold dead body. I did not even have time to react, or to identify the intentions of that person. I could recall he was wearing a cap, so just a survivor. He was waiting for me in the dark. 5 quick rounds, no questions asked. More than a week of scavenging brought me some gear, all for nothing. I was sure he fired to kill, not to warn or out of reflex. It was pure murder. For a stupid alice pack and a shotgun.
- I saw real darkness. Not the darkness of the night under a pale moon, not the darkness in the soulless things trying to eat me. It was the darkness in that mofo's heart I saw — Pure evil. I was so sick that I stopped playing DayZ since that day. Maybe I prefer role-playing my death and surrender from that kind of existence.
