    Default The New Black Atheism

Black America's religious problem isn't that it's highly religious—most of America is religious—it's that, in my experience, it's highly religious to the point of exclusion, as if black people living their lives without God don't count. Black atheists or agnostics are often looked at by other blacks as alien or pitiable. A black atheist quoted in the New York Times last year said his mother was bothered more by the admission that he is an atheist than the admission that he is gay. Another in the Huffington Post said that declaring she was an atheist to her black friends was "social suicide."

Interesting read...I admit that I just kind of took the whole civil rights+church meme as, pardon the expression, gospel.

Reminds me of the secular black nationalists '68-'70 when the in-thing to do was travel to Algeria and play revolutionary.

There's definitely a correlation between the level of religiousness and hardship. The poorer, more oppressed, unhappier and less educated people are, the bigger the chance that they are (very) religious. Those circumstances result in religiousness but sometimes it's the other way around. A vicious circle.
This applies from individuals and groups of people to entire countries and continents.

Rrright, because only "dumb" uneducated people are religious. What exactly are you saying? That it's a bad thing for poor people to have faith in something? To look forward to salvation someday?

There are plenty of African Americans who will culturally identify themselves as Christian (Usually Baptist or AME), and leave as that. It will be similar to that of some Jews in Israel, some Catholics in Italy, or some Orthodox Christians in Russia. Their atheism/agnostism is there (usually the latter), but they like to cling to the cultural aspect.

So just because you have it "bad", you're dumb? Nice going, anything else you want to generalize about? There is quite a correlation otherwise over standard of living and faith.

Be it Christianity, Islam, Judaism or any other religion.

It does not show people being dumb, it just show people in hardship wishing for something better to come. Blacks in America have had a long history of hardship, and naturally their common culture is strongly influenced by it.

Hell, my grandpa is a stark atheist by very legitimate reasons, to say that my family isn't influenced by it is an understatement. Now apply that for the whole afro-american population and you might get the idea.

I have heard a lot of the stories of atheist coming out to their family's and those with the pretty religious family's sometimes get disowned to the point there never get to really see or speak to their families again. But of course the story's always vary depending on the person and their family.
Luckily for my mom is like most people thus a fake religious person, thus say they believe but do nothing they are suppose to do in their faith. So i got of easy.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gestures
Eye-rolling, performed by rotating the eyes upward and back down, can indicate incredulity, contempt, boredom, frustration, or exasperation. The gesture can be unconscious or can be performed consciously. The gesture occurs in many countries of the world, and is especially common among adolescents.[10]

Many people will be offended or disappointed if their offspring don't share their take on things.

If you say that you don't believe in a god your parents might interpret that as you saying what they believe in is non-sense. If they believe anyone who doesn't believe in god will go to hell, they might also be sad and frustrated to see their child taking the course downwards to fire and brimstone.

This can also occur in political groups. If you're a hippie who believe the worlds will go under unless people stop driving cares you might be upset if your son buys himself a gas guzzler.

Right, calm the fvck down. No knee-jerk frothing at the mouth plz. I didn't make any statement about good and bad and I didn't call anyone dumb either; uneducated is not the same as dumb, but can lead to bad decisions.
I also never said that "only" uneducated people are very religious, I used the word "correlation". If you're unsure of the definition, you could always google it.
I only made an observation which is undeniably obvious. There are always exceptions of course.

Aight, firstly listen here you bacon eating Nickleback listening fat f*ck; when you claim that anyone else insinuate that people who are poor and uneducated are "dumb", yeah, re-read your own post, you better have something to back that up with. Secondly, no-one said it was wrong, just that it could become a vicious cycle. Like f*cking Afghanistan. Cause it sure as hell wasn't credit default swaps that made that country go to sh*t.

Now how bout you take them meds', play some puckey, have your moma give you a handy jay and fill yourself up with some bacon and candy and calm the f*ck down, eh?
    P*ssy.
