The basic difference between French and Portuguese Lizard patterns is that the former is a ‘horizontal ‘pattern while the latter is a’ vertical’ pattern. The biggest problem is that the differences are quite subtle and given the changes in patterns and dye colours to both the French and Portuguese issue uniforms over the years the only sure way to know is to examine the garment’s label, which of course you can’t do with a photo.

Well it doesn't look like french camo or a french jacket/shirt, the pockets are not right and the shoulder rank slide should be longer. Don't know if it's protuguese, but it doesn't look french to me. BTW I saw a lot of french Indochina pictures and this one feels a bit more recent. My best guess would be a mercenary in Africa. Where did you find this ?

hi, he was a friend, who died in 1987, a freelance photographer. This picture was probably from that era or few years earlier, possibly 1985. Also the hat he's wearing looks a bit like a chapeau de brousse right? The shirt looks to me of the same cloth of which the TAP 47/54 tent triangles were made. As a matter or interest his name was Almerigo Grilz, he died on may 19th,1987 (see the week-end pix for another shot and a bit of a story)

yeah you might be right about the tent triangle cloth. about the Chapeau de Brousse i can only tell that it's not a french army issue, because the "stripes" on the top of the head should be vertical like this:

I checked the name you gave and it seems that he was killed in Mozambique, and this picture looks more like Africa than Indochina for sure.

    Interesting story, thanks mate.

Yep, he was with the Karen in 1985 but in more recent times than Indochina. My reference to Indochina was only to try to define the camo pattern of the shirt. I think on the hat you're definitely right! Regards

I would say Portuguese style, likely to be a Angolan made later copy or even one of the South African made copies for their SF, back in the Bush War days.

It is an old Tunisia pattern
It is based on the French F2 pattern with green and brown inversed
