"My country is supposed to be a total failure": Georgian president reflects on "third way" approach in Russia's shadow

While in the United States for the NATO Summit in Chicago, President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili made a brief stop in Princeton to offer his thoughts on Georgian reform and progress in spite of an antagonistic relationship with Russia. He spoke at a packed lecture on Thursday.“When the U.S. government asked Russia in 2008 what their plans were with Georgia, Russia responded, ‘Full annihilation — complete annihilation of the country.’ Not of the government, but of the country,” Saakashvili said.

It amazes me that in 21st century somebody so ridiculously stupid, delusional, cowardly and psychotic can be a Prsedident of any country. Seriously, it boggels my mind. Westerners do not know it, but in USSR Georgians were the wealthiest people and now they are looked at either with pity or laughter... I understand why the West supports him - the perpetual desire to sh*t as close to Russia as possible, but the Georgians (I always thought of highlanders as of proud people), how can they tolerate such an embarrassment?!

While i agree with the rest of our post, Misha managed to stomp down low level crime and corruption, and that was gnormous task by that time, if he avoided 888 blunder, he would've end up as a knight in shining armor among all ex-USSR leaders, sadly he entered mini-Hitler mode and we have what we have.

Nothing to add. Georgians were uber people in Soviet Union and now everything is because of evil Ruskies. 30% of Georgians lives in Russia and there is no problem with them!

I'm downright embarrassed about Saakashvili. I just can't find anything redeeming about him. Without US money, he's toast. He's just a buffoon of a leader.

Try to read this blog: http://berg-man.livejournal.com, it explains a lot, IMHO.
I have mixed feelings about it, from one side this guy shows how ridiculous modern Georgia became, from the other side - he sounds Nazi-style when discussing its own people.
When Some national Caucasian features mixed with overwhelming amount of propaganda, you'll have situation like that: uneducated majority with basically no future and angry educated minority accusing everyone of their own failures.
IMHO its so typical in such states, and unsurprisingly very similar to Baltics.

He's more authoritarian than Putin, yet he goes around talking out his ass. My country is best in this, best in that, most transparent, yet the little foreign investment he manages to corral are mostly from Egypt and Arab gulf.

Baltics have a lot more sense than this clown, and for that matter so do the Georgian people. But he's pretty much entrenched himself there by now and keeps himself around due to his hardline policies that please the refugees from Abkhazia and S. Ossetia, as well as the general ambivelence of people and tolerance to his rule provided that he keeps the economy developing, reforming the country and so on.

Ya'll a bunch of effing haters. Saakashvili is one of the most competent politicians on this God-forsaken planet. He's certainly better than Putin or Medvedev.
