RIP I love that painting
But what about the soda jerk? I guess nobody gives a f**cking sh!t about him huh? I mean, didn't he have to f**kin sit there and not move for god knows how f**kin long too. God damn it, I say RIP to the f**kin soda jerk too, 'cause he probably kicked off 15 20 F**kin years ago and most likely nobody said sh!t about it because nobody gives a f**kin sh!t about a f**kin soda jerk. Right? Well I do goddamn it!
From the SmithsonianIn April 1958, Rockwell told Clemens that he had an idea for a painting and asked if he would be willing to pose in uniform. Clemens asked his superiors – “I’m just a lowly trooper. Lowly troopers don’t make those decisions,” he said – and they gave their permission.
Clemens and young Locke were dispatched to a Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Pittsfield, Mass., for a photo shoot. A young man named Clarence Barrett initially played the man behind the counter. They were posed in various positions, and Rockwell used the photographs to do the painting.
Rockwell produced an early version, which he didn’t finish, that included Howard Johnson’s wall – with the names of the 28 flavors of ice cream etched into the mirror. That painting also is on display in the Norman Rockwell Museum.
For the final version he decided to substitute Barrett, the man behind the counter, with the older Johnson to emphasize the age difference between the men and the runaway. He also replaced the back wall with a more rustic backdrop: Howard Johnson’s seemed too urban, Rockwell thought, and he wanted to indicate that the boy had gotten farther from home.
Great art. Great story too. R.I.P. Trooper. Both Rockwell Museums are good trips, well worth it if you can make the time. A bit pricey on the entrance fee. Come prepared.
RIP trooper. It is a wonderful and timeless painting. It is an honorable way of remembering Sgt clemens.
rest in peace trooper. Rockwell did some great paintings, most all based on photographs of the subjects. Some artists call Rockwells work "illustrations" rather than art or paintings...whatever one calls his works, they were good. Don't make em like him anymore.
See? Nobody gives a sh!t about the soda jerk.
What about the little kid, Doc? You think he's had an easy life? What is he doing now, huh? At least the soda jerk had a steady job. This kid grew up uncertain of his future. He could be a homeless man right now for all we know.
